Service Mesh Architect

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology consulting organization seeking a Service Mesh Architect to join their platform engineering team. This is a 100% remote position available throughout the United States, offering the opportunity to design and operate service mesh platforms at scale across Kubernetes environments.

Our client is looking for an experienced architect who can deploy and manage Istio and Linkerd implementations, enabling secure, observable service-to-service communication while helping application teams adopt mesh capabilities without unnecessary complexity.

Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and operate service mesh platforms, primarily using Istio and Linkerd
• Provide secure, observable, and reliable service-to-service communication across Kubernetes infrastructure
• Implement and manage mTLS, PKI, and certificate lifecycle management
• Develop platform engineering solutions and mesh adoption strategies
• Work deeply with Envoy proxy internals and data plane configuration
• Guide application teams in adopting service mesh capabilities effectively
• Implement distributed tracing and observability for mesh traffic
• Build tooling and automation using Go or Python
• Troubleshoot complex issues across networking, application, and control plane layers
• Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure reliable production operations

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
• 6+ years of experience in platform engineering, SRE, or networking roles
• Production experience operating Istio or Linkerd
• Strong understanding of Envoy proxy internals and configuration
• Deep Kubernetes expertise including networking, CNI, and ingress
• Strong knowledge of mTLS, PKI, and certificate lifecycle management
• Experience with distributed tracing and observability for mesh traffic
• Proficiency in Go or Python for tooling and automation
• Strong troubleshooting skills across multiple technical layers
• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities

Preferred qualifications:

• Multi-cluster Istio or Linkerd deployment experience
• Familiarity with Cilium service mesh and eBPF networking
• Open-source contributions to service mesh projects
• Experience with SPIFFE/SPIRE for workload identity
• Exposure to zero-trust networking initiatives at enterprise scale
