About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential energy technology client who is building AI-driven transaction infrastructure for electricity markets. They have recently secured significant Series B funding and are expanding their core machine learning capabilities. We're seeking a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to own the technical direction of their revenue optimization platform.
This is a senior individual contributor role with real technical authority. You will define the mathematical approach to dynamic pricing, build production models, and set the roadmap for a pricing engine that processes billions of data points daily. This system sits on the critical path for business transactions and combines forecasting, optimization, and classical ML to drive automated decisions at scale.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction for pricing ML systems, defining what to build and how to build it while being accountable for performance outcomes
- Formulate and solve complex pricing problems using the right mathematical approach—whether stochastic programming, reinforcement learning, classical ML, or hybrid methods—based on problem requirements rather than familiarity
- Build and ship models end-to-end, writing production-grade Python and architecting models with deployment in mind without being blocked by engineering dependencies
- Develop probabilistic models to optimize risk management and short-term balancing decisions in highly dynamic environments
- Serve as the voice of pricing ML across commercial, product, and engineering teams, translating complex model behavior into clear, actionable insights
- Create a dynamic, real-time system that simultaneously optimizes for conversion probability, portfolio balance, and margin protection
What We're Looking For
Must-Have Qualifications:
- Deep experience building ML systems for pricing, revenue optimization, or real-time decision-making at companies where pricing is the core product, with a track record of production models that moved commercial metrics
- Strong foundation in stochastic optimization and probabilistic modeling, with the judgment to formulate ambiguous business problems mathematically before selecting tools
- First-principles reasoning across methods, choosing between stochastic programming, reinforcement learning, classical ML, or simple heuristics based on problem demands
- Engineering depth to match modeling skills: production-grade Python, high code quality standards, and ability to carry models from formulation to deployment independently
- Senior technical leadership experience setting direction for significant technical areas, influencing cross-functional teams, and translating complex model behavior for non-technical stakeholders
Valued Additional Experience:
- Real-time pricing at scale in ride-hailing, food delivery, logistics, or similar environments where latency and portfolio effects matter
- Energy markets, power trading, or portfolio risk management
- PhD or equivalent research depth in statistics, applied mathematics, operations research, or related quantitative disciplines
- Trade-off reasoning between optimization solvers and gradient-based methods, knowing when to apply each
- Causal inference or reinforcement learning in applied commercial settings
Location & Work Arrangement: United Kingdom, fully remote with distributed team across Europe, clear core hours, no internal meetings Friday afternoons
