About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology consultancy seeking a Head of Engineering to lead their AI-focused engineering practice in France. Our client is a B Corp-certified organization operating across multiple countries with a proven track record in enterprise digital transformation and AI-first delivery.

Reporting to the CTO, you will serve as the operational engine of the engineering organization—translating strategic vision into daily execution, leading the AI engineering community, and ensuring excellence across client-facing and product teams.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

• Deploy and govern AI-first architecture standards across all engineering squads, including agents, prompts, pipelines, and model governance
• Manage token economics across delivery: balancing model cost, latency, and quality to ensure production-grade AI systems
• Operate as senior technical authority on complex client engagements—designing AI-first architectures and shipping them to production
• Step in as Tech Lead on client projects when continuity and quality require direct technical leadership
• Define and enforce engineering standards: CI/CD practices, code reviews, incident management, and security posture
• Own technical incidents and escalations with clear post-mortems and accountability
• Directly manage Forward Deployed Engineers and AI tech leads—overseeing growth, performance, workload, and career development
• Run the engineering community's rituals: critiques, showcases, learning circles, and shared knowledge systems
• Foster cross-project collaboration by surfacing reusable patterns and turning field learnings into shared standards
• Build mentorship structures and learning pathways for senior and forward-deployed engineers
• Lead the hiring process for engineering roles: sourcing, interviews, technical assessments, and recommendations
• Partner with delivery and staffing teams on capacity planning and utilization
• Contribute to pre-sales through technical scoping, estimation, proposal input, and executive advisory
• Produce and own engineering KPIs: velocity, quality, incident rate, technical debt, and team health

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 12+ years of software engineering experience with significant leadership of engineering organizations (VP Engineering, Head of Engineering, Head of Tech, or scale-up CTO)
• Production-grade experience delivering AI-first systems: LLM integration, RAG pipelines, agent orchestration
• Deep understanding of token economics (cost, latency, quality tradeoffs) in production AI systems
• Mastery of AI coding assistants as force multipliers; you still code by choice
• Track record leading delivery in complex, client-facing environments with real users and constraints
• Proven people development and management experience, scaling engineering practices through mentorship and community-building
• Systems thinking with strong documentation practices: architecture decisions, ADRs, reproducible quality standards
• Ability to operate at multiple altitudes—from engineering stand-ups to leadership forums—often in the same day
• High expectations balanced with psychological safety and accountability
• Ability to read team signals early: engagement, workload balance, burnout risk, retention issues
• Commitment to Tech for Good: sustainability, accessibility, and responsible AI embedded in how you build
• Experience partnering with HR on hiring strategy, interviews, and talent pipeline development
• Bilingual French/English required for client and international collaboration

Nice to have:

• Cloud architecture certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, GCP/Azure Professional)
• Public speaking or publications on AI-first delivery
