Edge Functions Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential client in the developer platform space who is building cutting-edge serverless compute infrastructure. They're seeking an experienced Edge Functions Engineer to help evolve their open-source, globally-distributed runtime that powers server-side TypeScript functions at the edge.

This role offers the chance to work on fundamental infrastructure that enables developers to build truly global applications—handling everything from webhook receivers and AI inference to real-time bot integrations. You'll be working with modern technologies including Rust, Deno, and WebAssembly in a fully remote environment.

Responsibilities

• Evolve and maintain an open-source Rust-based runtime that manages isolate execution, enforces resource limits, and handles the main/user runtime split
• Implement comprehensive monitoring, alerting, and OpenTelemetry tracing to drive latency and reliability improvements
• Collaborate with open-source communities including the Deno team, contributing upstream and representing user requirements
• Participate in on-call rotation to ensure production health and reliability
• Build and enhance features including scheduled functions, background tasks, WebSocket streaming, ephemeral storage, and custom routing
• Drive deeper integration between edge functions and backend services (authentication, database, storage, real-time)
• Expand platform capabilities to support AI inference, protocol servers, static hosting, and other emerging use cases
• Improve developer experience through CLI tooling, DevTools integration, enhanced logging, and production environment parity

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of backend or systems engineering experience with strong fluency in both Rust and TypeScript
• Hands-on experience with V8 Isolates, Deno, and JavaScript runtime internals
• Proven track record operating infrastructure at scale using technologies such as Kubernetes, AWS, edge computing platforms, Redis, or comparable systems
• Clear vision for distributed compute and edge architecture patterns
• Bonus: Experience building developer-facing CLIs or front-end tooling for infrastructure products
