Staff Software Engineer

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential public safety technology organization seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their London team. In this senior technical role, you will shape architectural direction for mission-critical distributed systems where reliability, security, and performance are paramount.

Your day-to-day work will include:

• Leading technical architecture and establishing engineering standards through design reviews and system-wide insight
• Driving technical strategy across backend services, APIs, data flows, and system integrations that support critical workflows
• Collaborating with Engineering, Product, and Design teams to solve complex, ambiguous technical challenges
• Identifying and addressing systemic risks while improving observability, performance, and operational excellence
• Mentoring engineers and helping develop future technical leaders across teams
• Contributing directly to high-leverage implementation work, particularly in complex or high-risk areas
• Simplifying technical complexity and introducing patterns that improve engineering effectiveness

This is a hybrid role based in London, requiring onsite work Tuesday through Friday, with flexibility to work remotely on Mondays.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 15+ years of software engineering experience building and scaling complex software products
• Deep expertise in backend systems and distributed system design
• Strong experience with cloud platforms and production service operations
• Proven track record driving technical solutions across multiple teams or broad product areas
• Strong understanding of system design, reliability, performance, observability, and security principles
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases
• Demonstrated ability to write clean, maintainable, production-grade code
• Ability to influence technical direction and organizational outcomes without formal authority
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Highly valued experience:

• Enterprise SaaS, mission-critical systems, or compliance-sensitive domains
• Evidence management, records systems, chain-of-custody concepts, or highly trusted data systems
• Hybrid, on-premises, or cloud-connected product architectures
• Modern backend languages and platforms such as Java, Go, C#, or Python
