Technical Director, Middle Market Industry Segment – Commercial

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential insurance organization in their search for a Technical Director to lead underwriting strategy within the Middle Market commercial segment. This role serves as the technical authority for complex property and casualty risks, providing expert guidance to underwriting teams and ensuring disciplined risk selection across global portfolios.

This position is available to remote candidates across the United States, with a preference for candidates based in Columbus, OH. Hybrid arrangements will be considered for qualified professionals.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement strategic plans to drive profitable business opportunities within assigned commercial Middle Market industry segments, monitoring portfolio management to ensure alignment with risk appetite and strategy
• Provide guidance, direction, and authority on industry practice referrals, serving as the technical expert for underwriting consultation through office hours, roundtables, and team huddles
• Advise national field underwriting teams on risk selection, broker relationships, portfolio management, business mix, catastrophe exposure management, and quality underwriting decisions
• Collaborate with industry business leaders and field teams to establish and maintain underwriting guidelines, authority, appetite, and standards while developing retention and new business strategies
• Partner with Risk Management and Claims teams to monitor loss trends, regulatory changes, and emerging hazards, implementing continuous improvement strategies for stronger portfolio performance
• Work closely with product, actuarial, and underwriting leadership teams to execute industry strategy, refine pricing models, and support reinsurance placement and policy limits management
• Foster continuous learning by educating field underwriting teams on industry-specific knowledge, insurance principles, trends, and risk factors through mentoring, coaching, and co-facilitation of training initiatives
• Participate in broker visits and industry events to strengthen relationships and gain market insights, assisting in the creation of industry white papers to advance technical competency
• Complete underwriting quality reviews to confirm alignment with underwriting strategy and expectations for assigned industry segments

What We're Looking For

• Undergraduate degree preferably in business or related field; graduate studies preferred
• CPCU, ARM, or other industry designations preferred
• Typically 10+ years of Middle Market and/or related commercial lines underwriting experience with extensive technical understanding of assigned industry segments
• Comprehensive industry knowledge including underwriting, pricing, operations, producer management, competitive landscape, and product development
• Strong industry underwriting acumen with proven ability to drive results and demonstrate strategic and organizational agility
• Advanced level of industry underwriting expertise with knowledge of commercial property and casualty products, finance and actuarial concepts, regulatory environment, and reinsurance
• Excellent communication, collaboration, relationship management, influencing skills, and conflict resolution abilities
• Strategic analyzing and problem-solving capabilities with strong decision-making skills and innovation mindset
• Ability to engage and motivate people while managing and improving processes through effective planning and organization

Pay

The national salary range for this position is $138,000 to $243,000, with an expected starting range of $138,000 to $206,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of the role, geographic location, and market conditions.
