About This Opportunity
We are representing a well-funded energy technology company that is scaling rapidly across the UK and EU. Our client has built AI-native transaction infrastructure serving thousands of business customers, and they've recently closed significant Series B funding to accelerate their global expansion.
They're looking for a Staff QA Automation Engineer to architect quality engineering standards across their platform engineering organization. This is a specialist individual contributor role reporting to the Head of QA, with no direct reports but significant influence across distributed engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement a risk-aware CI testing standard that enables fast, targeted test runs with clear confidence signals at the point of change
- Build dependency models that drive test selection and breaking-change detection across microservice architectures
- Establish unit, integration, and contract testing standards with observability layers to maintain pipeline reliability
- Develop automated pass/fail analysis for canary releases against production traffic, enabling deployments to promote or roll back without manual intervention
- Drive AI integration in the quality pipeline, including LLM-based change-risk classification, targeted mutation testing, test generation, and self-healing checks
- Create reference test suites in real service repositories that demonstrate standards in practice
- Architect and maintain test automation frameworks and tooling used across the wider engineering organization
What We're Looking For
Must have:
- Expert-level proficiency with test automation frameworks including pytest, Playwright, Selenium, and API testing tools
- Proven experience architecting and maintaining test automation frameworks adopted across an engineering organization
- Deep knowledge of testing distributed systems and microservice architectures, including API-level automation, CI/CD integration, and service-level testing strategies
- Track record of leading innovation and proof-of-concepts in testing, particularly AI-led regression optimization and change-risk analysis
- Strong collaboration skills with experience delivering across multi-project environments and distributed teams
- Experience with contract testing or consumer/provider verification (Pact, OpenAPI schema validation, or similar)
- AWS infrastructure experience including Lambda, GitHub Actions self-hosted runners, and deployment tooling
Nice to have:
- Experience with progressive deployment strategies: canary releases, feature flags, automated rollback from production signals
- Knowledge of mutation testing, whether traditional tooling or LLM-based approaches
- Test-data management and environment-isolation strategy in shared environments
- Background in regulated or high-stakes domains such as energy, fintech, or payments
