Staff Backend Engineer, Hierarchy

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join their core infrastructure team. This role focuses on building and optimizing tier-1 services that form the foundation of their productivity platform. You'll be working on distributed systems that handle high throughput and support rapid company growth, using technologies including TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Kafka, NestJS, and Amazon Web Services.

This is a remote position based in the USA, offering the opportunity to architect reliable, highly performant distributed systems that serve as the integration point for every team in the organization.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain robust, scalable backend systems using Node.js with Express and NestJS frameworks
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, designers, and product managers to drive complex projects forward
• Tune and optimize database queries for maximum efficiency and performance at scale
• Continuously improve existing codebases for enhanced performance and user experience
• Troubleshoot and debug production issues, ensuring reliable system operations
• Mentor team members and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• 8+ years of professional experience building backend services for SaaS products
• Demonstrated success building and scaling backend systems in production environments
• Deep expertise in relational database query optimization, preferably PostgreSQL
• Extensive experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases, including data modeling best practices
• Strong understanding of RESTful API design and implementation principles
• Experience working within agile development methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban
• Proficiency with version control systems, particularly Git
• Exceptional problem-solving abilities and passion for tackling complex technical challenges
• Strong communication skills with proven ability to collaborate effectively across teams
• Hands-on experience with microservices architecture and containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks such as Angular, React, or Vue
• Professional production experience specifically with Node.js, Express, and NestJS
