Senior Java Developer – Contractor

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential financial services organization seeking a Senior Java Developer for a contract engagement in Sheffield. This is an initial 6-month contract requiring 3 days per week on site, working with a global team to modernize a business-critical platform through microservices architecture.

You'll lead development efforts while contributing hands-on to the design and implementation of scalable solutions across the full technology stack. This role involves managing team delivery, collaborating with stakeholders, and driving the progressive modernization of legacy systems.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality code into production, supporting microservices-based architecture design and evolution
• Set delivery pace across the team through consistent, reliable output and leadership by example
• Engage with stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into actionable technical direction
• Contribute solutions informed by understanding of the wider platform and delivery context
• Shape collaborative engineering culture across global teams
• Proactively manage risks, remove blockers, and improve processes to support effective delivery
• Lead teams to deliver frequent, reliable production releases with clear quality and delivery expectations

What We're Looking For

• Extensive software engineering experience with a proven track record designing, building, and deploying backend services to production
• Strong hands-on development experience with Java, ideally using recent language versions and modern frameworks
• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker and Kubernetes, particularly deployment in cloud environments such as GCP
• Experience developing modern user interfaces using React or similar frameworks
• Experience planning and delivering data migrations between technology stacks (e.g., MongoDB to PostgreSQL)
• Proven experience designing microservices with focus on scalability, resilience, and maintainability
• Strong grounding in CI/CD principles with hands-on experience driving automated build, test, and deployment pipelines
• Experience designing, building, and supporting RESTful APIs in production environments
• Experience designing schemas and working with PostgreSQL databases in production settings
• Prior experience within financial services, ideally within banking or regulated environments
• Valid UK work authorization required

Pay

Pay via Get A Job.ai: £500-£550 per day
