Smartsheet is hiring a Senior Data Scientist II for a fully remote position anywhere in the United States. This full-time role focuses on building machine learning models and autonomous agents that improve how teams work.
What This Role Involves
You'll design and deploy advanced machine learning systems and AI agents that enhance customer experiences throughout their lifecycle with Smartsheet. Working with petabyte-scale operational data spanning decades of real work, you'll build predictive models, autonomous decision-making agents, and evaluation systems that drive customer retention, expansion, and satisfaction for millions of users worldwide.
Your Responsibilities
- Architect autonomous agents that combine predictive models, contextual information retrieval, and reasoning to guide or execute business decisions
- Develop predictive and prescriptive models addressing key customer lifecycle challenges: churn risk, expansion potential, feature adoption, and account health
- Build data infrastructure and knowledge systems that ground agent reasoning while maintaining privacy and responsible data practices
- Design agent tooling, information retrieval strategies, and decision logic to determine when agents should act, recommend, defer, or escalate
- Create evaluation frameworks and monitoring systems to verify agent quality and detect performance degradation in production
- Define success metrics and testing strategies for agent deployment that measure genuine customer and business impact
- Partner with Product, Engineering, and Applied AI teams throughout development and production launch
- Build machine learning expertise within product and engineering organizations and provide mentorship to data science colleagues
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with 8+ years of experience (or 10+ years with advanced degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Economics, or Operations Research)
- Deep expertise across traditional and contemporary machine learning: ensemble methods, linear models with regularization, transformer-based models, foundation model embeddings, causal machine learning, and offline reinforcement learning
- Strong background in causal inference: treatment effect modeling, difference-in-differences, propensity-score methods, and synthetic control approaches
- Solid statistics and experimental design knowledge: hypothesis testing, power calculations, corrections for multiple comparisons, and quasi-experimental methods
- Proven experience deploying large language model and agent-based systems in production: tool integration, retrieval systems, multi-step reasoning, evaluation, and safety guardrails
- Production machine learning experience: feature engineering and automation, model health monitoring, drift detection, retraining strategies, and batch versus real-time serving decisions
- Proficiency in SQL and Python; familiarity with large-scale ML tooling (Spark, Databricks, Snowflake), ML frameworks (PyTorch, scikit-learn, XGBoost, LightGBM), and visualization platforms
- Customer lifecycle expertise including churn analysis, expansion modeling, adoption analysis, and SaaS key metrics (NRR, GRR, ARR)
- Production-oriented perspective on latency, cost, monitoring, drift, hallucination risks, and error handling
- Proven ability to establish cross-functional partnerships and communicate technical findings to technical and executive stakeholders
- Self-directed approach to learning new tools, technologies, and methodologies in dynamic, fast-moving environments
