Systems Engineer – Consultant

Institute for Building Technology and Safety is hiring a Systems Engineer - Consultant to advance its Technology Services initiatives at its Ashburn, Loudoun County office. In this full-time consulting role, you'll drive compliance modernization, strengthen cybersecurity posture, and reduce organizational technology risk across critical infrastructure systems.

About This Position

This Systems Engineer - Consultant position focuses on delivering strategic technical solutions that strengthen your organization's security and operational resilience. You'll partner with Technology Services teams on multi-month consulting engagements (typically 6–12 months) centered on SOC 2 Type II and CMMC 2.0 compliance frameworks, infrastructure overhauls, and enterprise cybersecurity improvements. This role demands hands-on expertise, independent judgment, and the ability to translate complex technical challenges into actionable, defensible solutions that reduce business risk.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess current infrastructure, security controls, and compliance posture against SOC 2 and CMMC 2.0 standards
• Design and recommend systems architecture improvements aligned with compliance and security objectives
• Lead infrastructure modernization efforts to improve resilience, scalability, and threat defense
• Identify, document, and prioritize technology risks; propose evidence-based mitigation strategies
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement technical controls and validate compliance
• Document systems configurations, decisions, and best practices for organizational knowledge transfer

Requirements

• Proven experience as a systems engineer, infrastructure architect, or equivalent consulting role
• Deep knowledge of SOC 2 Type II compliance frameworks and controls
• Working familiarity with CMMC 2.0 maturity levels and requirements
• Strong background in cybersecurity principles, network security, and systems administration
• Demonstrated ability to assess technology risk and recommend mitigation approaches
• Excellent technical communication; ability to explain complex topics to non-technical stakeholders
• Independent judgment, professionalism, and ability to work autonomously
