Backend Engineer (Golang) – Bank Balance

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization in their search for a Backend Engineer (Golang) based in Berlin, Germany. Our client is building core banking infrastructure that serves millions of small business customers across multiple markets.

This role sits within a platform team focused on balance management and transaction systems. You'll be working on consolidating regional services into a unified global architecture, building ledger operations, and creating scalable transaction history services that handle high volumes while maintaining strict data consistency.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve core banking services including ledger operations and transaction processing, contributing to the transformation of regional systems into a unified global platform
• Design and implement solutions for complex distributed systems challenges, ensuring resilience and performance under high transaction volumes
• Support modernization efforts by improving observability, adding test coverage, refactoring legacy code, and introducing new architectural patterns without disrupting live operations
• Participate in key architectural decisions for ledger and transaction history systems, ensuring global scalability
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Risk, Treasury, Finance, and Infrastructure to deliver compliant and reliable solutions
• Take ownership from design through production, monitoring service performance and continuously improving delivery practices

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Solid backend engineering experience building reliable, high-volume services with thoughtful system design, API development, and data modeling
• Proficiency in Golang, with willingness to work in other languages such as Kotlin or Elixir as needed
• Strong focus on writing maintainable, well-tested code and following CI/CD best practices
• Experience building, deploying, and running services in cloud environments (AWS preferred) using Docker and Kubernetes
• Comfort working with relational databases under load, with focus on data consistency
• Strong collaboration and communication skills for working across distributed teams
• Interest in building reliable financial services and understanding banking domain challenges

Preferred:

• Experience with Elixir for working with legacy services
• Deep PostgreSQL knowledge including performance tuning, complex queries, and schema design
• Familiarity with event streaming platforms (Kafka preferred) and modern observability tools (Grafana, Honeycomb, etc.)
