About This Opportunity
Our talent team is representing a confidential AI infrastructure organization in the UK. This Principal Infrastructure Engineer role sits within the Platform team and offers the chance to architect next-generation cloud infrastructure purpose-built for high-performance compute and AI/ML workloads. You'll drive technical strategy, design globally distributed systems, and lead implementation of cutting-edge virtualisation, networking, and orchestration solutions.
This is a full-time, permanent position based in the UK with occasional office travel, reporting to the Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Architect and implement virtualisation solutions optimised for HPC environments, including hypervisor tuning and dynamic resource allocation for storage and networking
- Lead lifecycle management of bare-metal hardware, from provisioning to orchestration, with deep Unix/Linux system expertise
- Design high-performance, cloud-native storage and networking solutions using advanced protocols (TCP, UDP, DNS, encryption) and software-defined networking technologies
- Deploy and manage Kubernetes clusters across hybrid and multi-cloud environments, leveraging CNIs, service meshes, and scalable CI/CD pipelines
- Implement security hardening including RBAC, network policies, admission controllers (OPA/Gatekeeper, Kyverno), secrets management (Vault/OpenBao), and supply chain security with image scanning and signed artifacts
- Build observability pipelines integrating logs, metrics, and distributed tracing to monitor global systems
- Create automation frameworks using Terraform, Ansible, Go, and Python to reduce operational overhead and streamline deployments
- Evaluate emerging technologies and develop architectural proposals balancing technical and business requirements
- Mentor team members on architectural principles and best practices while partnering with cross-functional stakeholders
- Produce clear, concise documentation for infrastructure designs, processes, and systems
What We're Looking For
Required qualifications:
- Proven experience in infrastructure architecture and solution design, with ability to produce detailed technical proposals
- Demonstrated success evaluating and adopting new technologies and toolsets
- Extensive expertise in large-scale global infrastructure deployments, particularly AI-native, HPC, and cloud-native environments
- Advanced knowledge of Kubernetes fundamentals, container networking (CNI), and service mesh technologies
- Deep understanding of virtualisation and hypervisor technologies for high-performance workloads
- Strong proficiency in networking protocols (TCP, UDP, DNS, BGP) and SDN solutions
- Skilled in Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform, Ansible, and cloud orchestration frameworks
- Hands-on coding experience in Go, Python, or similar languages for automation
- Solid grasp of observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana) and distributed tracing systems
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
Preferred qualifications:
- Expertise in AI/ML workloads, GPU-accelerated systems, or HPC infrastructures, including GPU partitioning with MIG and NVIDIA GPU Operator
- Experience with RDMA fabrics such as InfiniBand or RoCEv2, and GPUDirect data paths
- High-throughput distributed storage at scale (Ceph, parallel filesystems)
- Familiarity with hybrid cloud and edge computing principles
- Experience leading architecture initiatives in agile environments
