About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential defense technology organization seeking a Senior Autonomy Integration Engineer to join their London team. This position is critical to deploying advanced autonomous systems onto unmanned platforms, bridging the gap between research and real-world operations.
This is a hands-on role requiring strong systems thinking and the ability to thrive in fast-paced test environments. You'll work at the intersection of hardware, software, and systems engineering, ensuring mission-critical autonomous systems function reliably in the field.
Location: London
Travel: Approximately 30-40% annually to test sites, customer locations, and integration events
Responsibilities
- Integrate autonomy software onto unmanned aircraft systems, ensuring seamless operation across compute hardware, sensors, and control interfaces
- Own build, configuration, and validation processes for flight-ready systems; coordinate hardware/software compatibility and mission readiness
- Provide on-site support during live flight operations, including safety checks, system bring-up, and time-critical troubleshooting
- Diagnose and resolve integration issues across complex autonomy software stacks and embedded systems in both lab and field environments
- Manage flight data collection and post-mission analysis, collaborating with engineering teams to refine system behaviors
- Work closely with autonomy, guidance/navigation/control, systems, and test teams to deliver and validate mission-critical functionality
- Develop tools and processes to improve integration timelines, flight test reliability, and overall team efficiency
- Support documentation and system-level validation required for certification, airworthiness, and defense compliance
What We're Looking For
Required:
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or similar degree (or equivalent practical experience)
- Typically 7+ years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 5+ years with a Master's; or 4+ years with a PhD
- Proficiency in C++ and Python, with familiarity in real-time operating systems
- Strong Linux development skills and experience with embedded systems, shell scripting, and system diagnostics
- Knowledge of sensor integration, sensor fusion, and middleware frameworks such as ROS or DDS
- Hands-on experience supporting flight demonstrations or live exercises
- Experience with simulation tools and environments for testing and validation
- Strong problem-solving abilities with a track record of troubleshooting and optimizing system performance
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills in multidisciplinary environments
Preferred:
- Direct experience with unmanned aerial systems or flight test campaigns
- Familiarity with autonomy software stacks, flight control systems, or guidance/navigation/control pipelines
- Competence in sensor integration, electronics debugging, or avionics bring-up
- Experience developing automation tools for system testing, logging, and data parsing
- Comfortable interfacing with defense stakeholders during field events or technical reviews
- Experience with UCI and OMS Standards
