About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI research organization in their search for talented individuals to join a structured fellowship program focused on AI safety and security research. This is a unique 4-month, full-time opportunity to conduct empirical research under direct mentorship from leading researchers in the field.

Our client runs multiple cohorts throughout the year and reviews applications on a rolling basis. In previous cohorts, over 80% of fellows produced publishable papers, and 25-50% received full-time offers from our client or successfully transitioned to impactful roles at other leading organizations.

Program Structure & Responsibilities

During this 4-month fellowship, you will:

• Work full-time on an empirical research project aligned with AI safety or security priorities
• Primarily use external infrastructure such as open-source models and public APIs
• Produce a public output such as a paper submission or open-source contribution
• Receive direct one-on-one mentorship from experienced researchers
• Access shared workspace facilities in Berkeley, California or London, UK
• Connect with the broader AI safety and security research community
• Participate in weekly research discussions and collaborative sessions

Research Focus Areas may include:

• Scalable Oversight: techniques to keep highly capable models helpful and honest
• Adversarial Robustness and AI Control: ensuring advanced AI systems remain safe in unfamiliar scenarios
• Model Organisms: creating experimental systems to study potential alignment failures
• Mechanistic Interpretability: understanding internal workings of large language models
• AI Security: penetration testing, vulnerability research, and offensive security applications
• AI Welfare: developing evaluations and mitigations for potential welfare considerations

What We're Looking For

Essential Requirements:

• Fluency in Python programming
• Strong technical background in computer science, mathematics, physics, or related field
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for 4 months
• Work authorization in the US, UK, or Canada (visa sponsorship not available)
• Located in the US, UK, or Canada during the program
• Motivated by making AI safe and beneficial for society
• Ability to implement ideas quickly and communicate clearly
• Thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments

Particularly Strong Candidates May Have:

• Experience with empirical machine learning research projects
• Experience working with large language models
• Track record of open-source contributions, especially in LLM or security repositories
• Experience with deep learning frameworks and experiment management
• Background in penetration testing, vulnerability research, or offensive security work
• Reported CVEs or been awarded bug bounties
• Demonstrated success bringing clarity to ambiguous technical problems
• Interest in transitioning to full-time AI research roles

Pay

This fellowship provides a weekly stipend of:

• 3,850 USD per week (US-based fellows)
• 2,310 GBP per week (UK-based fellows)
• 4,300 CAD per week (Canada-based fellows)

Additional benefits include:

• Funding for compute resources (~$15,000 per month)
• Coverage for other research expenses
• Benefits that vary by country
• Expectation of 40 hours per week for 4 months (with possible extension)
