AI Engineer (m/w/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential software development organization based in Nürnberg that is building production-grade AI systems for enterprise clients. As an AI Engineer, you will take ownership of the complete lifecycle of AI-powered applications—from initial concept through stable production deployment.

Your core responsibilities include:

• Design and implementation of agentic systems with tool calling, multi-step workflows, state management, retry logic, fallbacks, human-in-the-loop patterns, and appropriate guardrails
• Development of LLM applications including RAG pipelines, structured extraction, evaluation frameworks, and observability tooling
• Integration of ML models, foundation models, and data-driven services into existing and new systems, including APIs, data flows, and surrounding infrastructure
• Hands-on development of scalable, maintainable, and performant applications on modern cloud platforms using services such as AWS Bedrock/SageMaker or Azure OpenAI/AI Foundry
• Identification of AI use cases in client projects, with honest assessment of when agent-based solutions are appropriate versus deterministic approaches
• Use of AI coding tools productively and responsibly in your own development workflow, demonstrating best practices to the team
• Technical consulting with clients on architecture, technology stack, and build-versus-buy decisions
• Ensuring code quality through clean code principles, testing, code reviews, and best practices
• Active contribution to the growing AI competency within the team—setting directions, sharing knowledge, and establishing standards

What We're Looking For

Our client seeks experienced software engineers who can move AI from demonstration to production as part of complex business applications. You should be a developer with true engineering depth, ideally with full-stack experience, and comfortable working in cloud environments.

Required qualifications:

• Multiple years of experience in modern software development, ideally in full-stack environments
• Practical experience with LLMs and generative AI in real projects: prompting, RAG, embeddings/vector databases, function calling, fine-tuning, or agent frameworks
• Experience with or serious interest in agentic engineering—you have taken an agent beyond demo status or are eager to do so
• Solid understanding of ML fundamentals and data processing, including model capabilities and limitations
• Cloud development experience with AWS and/or Azure, including CI/CD, containers, and Infrastructure as Code
• Proficiency with clean code principles, SOLID design, and architecting maintainable software
• Independent, responsible working style with strong analytical and conceptual abilities
• Ability to develop pragmatic solutions for complex requirements and think beyond immediate constraints
• High motivation and passion for software development in a rapidly evolving field
• Very good German language skills (C1 level) in writing and speaking, plus good English proficiency

Preferred experience with one or more of:

• Frameworks: Angular,.NET, NestJS
• Languages: C#, TypeScript, Python
• Infrastructure as Code with Terraform and/or CDK

This is a senior-level, full-time position based in Nürnberg with flexible remote work options within Germany.
