About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential data platform organization seeking a Staff Software Engineer - Backend to join their London office. This is a founding engineering role focused on building a managed database product that integrates transactional workloads with analytics and AI capabilities. You'll be instrumental in establishing both the product and the team's presence in London.
Responsibilities
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will tackle complex technical challenges across multiple domains:
- Design and build distributed systems spanning product to infrastructure, including service architecture, monitoring, workflow orchestration, and developer experience
- Develop reliable, secure, and high-performance services and client libraries for storing and accessing large-scale data on cloud storage backends (AWS S3, GCS, Azure Blob Store)
- Build product features that empower customers to easily store and access their data
- Own core platform logic including database lifecycle management, compute orchestration, HA failover, and control plane operations
- Develop network edge components handling client connections, query traffic routing, and multiple data protocols (Postgres, HTTP, WebSockets)
- Solve reliability problems, proactively identify causes of downtime, and systematically remove root causes
- Define SLIs, meet SLOs, and drive long-term reliability improvements
- Build AI-powered automation to improve operational efficiency
What We're Looking For
- BS degree (or higher) in Computer Science or related field
- 8+ years of production-level experience in Java, Scala, C++, or similar language
- Proven experience developing large-scale distributed systems
- Experience working on a SaaS platform or with Service-Oriented Architectures
- Strong knowledge of SQL
- Ability to work on cross-functional infrastructure, observability, and automation challenges
