About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential financial services organization seeking a Specialist I - Loan Underwriting (VA) to join their credit operations team. This entry-level role offers the opportunity to build foundational skills in mortgage underwriting, credit analysis, and risk assessment within a structured learning environment.

Our client maintains a robust underwriting and appraisals function responsible for evaluating credit requests, assessing property valuations, and ensuring compliance with lending standards and regulatory requirements. You'll work closely with experienced professionals who will guide your development in this critical business function.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and process loan applications according to established underwriting standards and guidelines in a timely manner
• Analyze borrower financial information, including income verification, credit history, repayment capacity, and overall creditworthiness
• Review appraisal reports and property valuations for accuracy and compliance with applicable guidelines
• Gather additional documentation and information as needed to make sound credit decisions
• Determine appropriate risk levels and provide approval or denial recommendations
• Maintain strong documentation practices and ensure adherence to internal policies and regulatory standards
• Respond to inquiries from internal teams and external customers regarding loan application status
• Collaborate with lending, operations, and risk management teams to support timely credit decisions
• Apply underwriting criteria consistently while identifying and mitigating potential risks

What We're Looking For

• Entry-level candidates with little to no prior underwriting experience; advanced education may substitute for experience
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail when reviewing financial documents
• Ability to follow standard procedures and clearly defined protocols
• Effective written and verbal communication skills for routine information sharing
• Comfortable working in a closely supervised environment with structured guidance
• Willingness to obtain and maintain NMLS registration as required
• Capacity to handle routine problems using established solutions
• Team-oriented approach and willingness to support departmental goals
• Located in or willing to relocate to the United States (remote work arrangements may be discussed)
