Software Architect

Position Overview

We are representing a confidential software organization seeking an experienced Software Architect to join their Architecture, Engineering, and Construction data team. This senior individual-contributor role will define cloud-native services and distributed-systems architecture that power foundational data infrastructure across the built-asset lifecycle.

Our client is building platforms, services, and unified data models that enable the continuous flow of AEC data—including 3D models, 2D drawings, issue tracking, cost data, and sensor streams—across products and third-party integrations. The architect will collaborate with software architects, domain experts, and product teams to shape the next generation of industry cloud capabilities.

This role reports to the Distinguished Architect and focuses on shaping how multiple teams design and build through standards, reference architectures, and design-review governance, rather than owning a single service. The exact focus adapts to your strengths and organizational needs.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve API surfaces across AEC data services, including resource modeling, addressing, versioning, backward-compatible evolution, and query APIs
• Define and evolve cross-team, cloud-native architecture; design distributed systems including service contracts and event-driven flows
• Design, document, and evolve data schemas for AEC domain entities—buildings, infrastructure, spaces, systems, components, and relationships—including semantic models, property sets, and classification systems
• Own schema versioning, compatibility, deprecation, and migration; maintain schema registry, validation rules, and quality checks
• Establish standards, reference architectures, and reusable components; author architecture proposals and decision records for cross-organizational review
• Evaluate alternative architectural directions through modeling and prototyping to de-risk key decisions
• Mentor engineers and fellow architects on emerging and established technologies and architectural practice
• Ensure reliability, security, and performance of systems; define SLOs and drive observability through metrics, tracing, and logging
• Communicate architecture with clear views and diagrams; produce comprehensive documentation and onboarding materials

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
• 10+ years designing cloud-native, distributed systems, including 5+ years at cross-team architect altitude (Software Architect, Principal Engineer, Staff+, or equivalent)
• Deep expertise in cloud services (ideally AWS), API/service design, and distributed-systems patterns including microservices, event-driven architecture, and resilience
• Solid grounding in data modeling and schema design, including schema definition languages (JSON Schema), versioning, and backward/forward-compatibility strategies
• Excellent knowledge of software design and architecture patterns
• Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and drive alignment across teams outside direct management
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills with a track record of guiding diverse, cross-functional teams
• Mastery of conveying complex ideas concisely and persuasively across a range of stakeholders
• Ability to collaborate with a global team

Preferred Qualifications (depth in a few areas matters more than breadth):

• AWS core services: EC2, ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, RDS
• Domain-driven service decomposition, data consistency patterns (CQRS, event sourcing, sagas), multi-tenant/multi-region design
• REST API design and evolution; GraphQL including federation
• Relational and NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, PostgreSQL)
• OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, metrics/SLOs for data services
• Semantic technologies: knowledge graphs, RDF/OWL, or property graphs
• Building Information Modeling concepts or parametric modeling systems
• AI systems: RAG, agents/MCP, agentic orchestration (LangGraph, Semantic Kernel), LLM observability
• Event-driven architectures: Kafka or Kinesis; schema registries; exactly-once processing
• AEC domain knowledge; familiarity with industry standards (IFC, COBie, gbXML, CityGML, LandXML, UniFormat, OmniClass)

Location: EMEA, UK (remote or hybrid arrangements available)
