Open Source Networking Software Engineer – ToR Switch / SmartNIC / DPU

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology organization seeking an Open Source Networking Software Engineer to work on cutting-edge data center networking solutions. This role focuses on ToR switches, SmartNICs, and DPUs, bringing hyperscaler-grade open source networking to enterprise environments.

Our client partners with networking silicon providers to optimize Linux-based stacks for ASICs, boards, and appliances. You'll work at the intersection of hardware acceleration and software innovation, contributing to routing, kernel networking, eBPF, and related technologies.

Location: Remote - APAC, LATAM, Canada, China, or USA time zones

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain advanced networking software for data center environments
• Contribute upstream to open source networking projects and communities
• Collaborate with public cloud providers and network silicon vendors
• Design and implement software-defined networking solutions
• Write high-quality, secure, well-documented C/C++ code
• Debug complex networking issues and deliver production-quality fixes
• Participate in technical documentation efforts
• Demonstrate technical leadership with partners and open source communities
• Work with distributed teams across global time zones
• Travel twice annually for team events (up to two weeks each)

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM field (or equivalent experience)
• Strong academic performance and track record of exceeding expectations
• Deep knowledge of networking architecture, design, and protocols
• Solid understanding of Linux networking from kernel to user space
• Fluency in C/C++ plus at least one of: Rust, Python, or Golang
• Professional written and spoken English
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Self-motivated with strong accountability and commitment to deadlines
• Ability to travel internationally twice per year

Preferred experience:

• Open source networking technologies: SoNIC/SAI, eBPF, AF_XDP, DPDK, Switchdev, OVN, Open vSwitch
• Hardware acceleration protocols: RDMA, RoCE, iWARP, NVMe, SR-IOV
• Computer architecture (x86, ARM, RISC-V)
• Complex IP network engineering and implementation
• Virtualization technologies (QEMU, KVM)
• Previous open source contributions and community involvement
• Performance engineering and security expertise
