Senior Security Engineer – Contract

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential fintech organisation seeking a Senior Security Engineer on a contract basis in London. This is a hands-on role where you'll take ownership of critical security operations during a transition period, working with cloud-native tooling and making an immediate impact from day one.

You'll join a focused security engineering function that operates directly within Azure infrastructure, managing detection and response capabilities through Microsoft Sentinel, Defender XDR, and infrastructure-as-code. This is not a policy-writing role—you'll be working at the technical layer, building detections, coordinating penetration tests, and driving vulnerability remediation across engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Own and operate alerting and monitoring capabilities, ensuring detection and response remain reliable through organisational change
• Maintain and improve the Microsoft Sentinel deployment: write and tune detection rules, manage data connectors, and reduce false positives
• Operate and optimise Defender XDR and Defender for Cloud, including policy management and security posture recommendations
• Maintain and extend automated security checks embedded in delivery pipelines
• Drive down remediation times for known vulnerabilities by coordinating with engineering squads
• Support data-loss-prevention controls to mitigate sensitive data exposure risks
• Implement safeguards around business use of AI tooling, including securing AI workloads and their data footprint
• Investigate suspicious activity surfaced through detection tooling: triage, escalate, or contain incidents as needed
• Support incident response activities including containment, evidence collection, and post-incident review
• Contribute to detection-as-code and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or Bicep) for security tooling
• Coordinate penetration test engagements including scoping, logistics, findings review, and remediation prioritisation

What We're Looking For

• Hands-on SIEM experience, ideally with Microsoft Sentinel; comparable platforms such as Splunk, Chronicle, or QRadar will be considered
• Practical Azure security experience across Defender for Cloud, Entra ID, Azure networking, and cloud security posture management
• Experience writing infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or Bicep in a security engineering context
• Track record of driving vulnerability remediation cycles with engineering teams
• Familiarity with data-loss-prevention controls
• Awareness of AI security considerations (securing AI workloads, data exposure risks) and/or using AI tooling to enhance security workflows
• Ability to contribute to threat modelling and communicate security risk clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
• A growth mindset and genuine curiosity for continuous learning
• SC-200 (Microsoft Security Operations Analyst) certification
• KQL proficiency for detection rule authoring and threat hunting
• Prior experience in fintech or financial services environments strongly preferred

This is a contract role, so we need someone who can hit the ground running without extended onboarding. You should be comfortable working independently, making technical decisions, and delivering visible impact quickly.
