Senior AI Engineer, Edinburgh

We are representing a confidential EdTech organization based in Edinburgh that is building transformative AI systems at scale. Our client is at the forefront of enterprise AI adoption, and they need a Senior AI Engineer to join a high-impact team driving core product innovation.

This is a rare opportunity to own end-to-end AI agent systems in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment. You'll be building production-grade solutions that directly reshape how organizations operate in the AI era.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship end-to-end AI agent systems and the platforms that support them, working closely with internal stakeholders to solve real user problems
• Develop sophisticated context and retrieval strategies, including retrieval pipelines, conversation memory, summarization logic, chunking strategies, and role-based access controls
• Create robust evaluation frameworks combining automated pipelines and human-in-the-loop review processes to ensure AI systems meet quality and performance standards
• Build tool integration layers including MCPs, APIs, data contracts, and error handling that enable reliable agent interactions with enterprise systems
• Contribute to architectural decisions and technical direction, providing evidence-based recommendations and challenging approaches when necessary
• Mentor team members on AI-assisted development practices and modern engineering workflows

What We're Looking For

• Production AI experience: You have shipped AI agent systems serving real users at scale and understand the unique engineering challenges of agent architectures, including context management, model selection and routing, cost optimization, tool use, and evaluation
• Product-minded engineering: Natural ability to identify user pain points, understand requirements, and build pragmatic, high-impact solutions with a bias toward rapid iteration and learning
• Full-stack capability: Comfortable working across the entire stack from LLM integration and backend services to data pipelines and frontend implementation
• Strong communication skills: Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both engineering and business audiences, proactively engaging stakeholders throughout the development process
• AI-assisted development fluency: Experienced with modern AI development tools and capable of mentoring others in these practices
• Execution under ambiguity: Comfortable working in fast-moving environments where requirements evolve and pragmatic decision-making is essential

Location and Work Arrangement

This role is based in Edinburgh with a hybrid work model requiring in-office collaboration three days per week. The position also includes flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 10 days per year.
