About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential aerospace technology company in their search for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their team in Munich, Germany. Our client is at the forefront of developing advanced communication systems for space and airborne platforms, and they need an experienced mechanical engineer to drive the design and development of cutting-edge satellite antenna systems.
In this role, you will take ownership of mechanical design aspects for phased array antennas, subsystems, and interfaces throughout the entire development lifecycle—from initial concept through space flight operations. You'll work on electronics packaging, thermal architecture, deployable structures, and environmental qualification of spacecraft components. This position offers the opportunity to work on next-generation space hardware in a dynamic, cross-functional startup environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design of satellite antenna systems and subsystems from concept through flight qualification
- Conduct requirements definition, architecture trades, and block diagram development
- Perform mechanical analysis including stress dynamics, shock, vibration, and thermal modeling
- Design electronics packaging solutions for space applications
- Manage mechanical interfaces and coordinate with cross-functional teams
- Develop deployable and actuated structures for orbital environments
- Oversee manufacturing, testing, qualification, and provide in-orbit support
- Present engineering design reviews to customers and executive leadership
- Contribute to proposal development and technical documentation
- Apply EMI/EMC mitigation techniques in mechanical designs
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university
- Minimum 5 years of experience in space antenna and payload mechanical engineering (Master's degree may count as 2 years of experience)
- Expertise in electronics packaging, thermal analysis, shock, vibration, stress dynamics, and cost analysis
- Experience conducting architectural trade studies with parametric and first-order analysis
- Proficiency with professional mechanical and FEA CAD tools such as Ansys Mechanical, SolidWorks Simulation, and Thermal Desktop
- Experience with CNC manufacturing and GD&T
- Background in advanced aerospace manufacturing including sandwich panels and carbon composites, OR experience with high-reliability deployment mechanisms for space applications
- Strong 3D CAD skills and technical drawing capabilities
- Experience designing and manufacturing mechanisms and mechanical actuators
- Knowledge of satellite thermal architectures including heat pipes, phase change materials, contact resistance, and surface finishes
- Understanding of LEO orbital thermal control environments
- Familiarity with launch and LEO environments (thermal, shock, vibration, radiation)
- Knowledge of design for test, manufacturability, assembly, and reliability principles
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Preferred Qualifications:
- Programming experience in Python, C++, or similar languages
- Experience with large deployable antenna arrays for orbital communications and sensor systems
- Robotics and control systems background
- PCBA experience
