Senior Backend Engineer, AI Engineering: Chat

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential DevSecOps platform company seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their AI Engineering team, focused on building the chat engine that powers natural-language and agentic interfaces across their platform. This role centers on developing core AI capabilities that enable customers to work faster and more securely throughout the software development lifecycle.

You'll build flow components and agentic flows using Python and LangGraph, integrate large language models, and orchestrate multi-agent systems. Your work will span both a Python-based AI workflow service and the client's Rails monolith, directly shaping how millions of users interact with AI-powered development tools.

Responsibilities

• Design and build flow components and agentic flows using Python and LangGraph to power AI chat capabilities and other AI features across the platform
• Develop, ship, and maintain backend features across Python and Rails services in a secure, well-tested, and performant manner
• Integrate generative AI models, providers, tools, and multi-agent orchestration patterns to expand capabilities and improve answer quality
• Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs, including chat entry points, permissions, and flow registration logic
• Improve debugging, observability, and test coverage using pytest, RSpec, and related frameworks; track and optimize latency, error rates, and reliability metrics
• Collaborate with Product, UX, frontend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and deliver high-quality improvements through iteration
• Document standards, patterns, and learnings to raise the bar for safe AI integration and evidence-driven engineering
• Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations to troubleshoot production issues and strengthen system resiliency

What We're Looking For

• Significant experience building and maintaining production Python backends, including APIs, data models, and asynchronous or long-running workloads
• Practical experience designing and shipping AI-powered, agentic backend features, including large language model integration, tool or function calling, and multi-agent orchestration
• Sound judgment about large language model limitations and safe use in production environments
• Working proficiency in Ruby on Rails, or strong willingness to learn (the platform's core codebase is Rails-based)
• Proficiency designing or extending REST or GraphQL APIs with attention to scalability, maintainability, and backward compatibility
• Strong SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including efficient queries and data modeling
• Ability to diagnose and prevent performance and reliability problems at scale
• Experience solving technical problems of high scope and complexity while advocating for quality, security, and performance improvements
• Openness to learning and collaborating in an async-first, distributed team environment
• Hands-on experience with agent frameworks such as LangGraph or LangChain is a strong plus
