Senior Software Engineer, Windows/Desktop Applications – Berlin, Germany

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential text-to-speech technology organization based in Berlin, Germany. Our client is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead Windows desktop application development. This is a fully remote role within a distributed team environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI (or related UI frameworks), C#, XAML, and C++ when required
• Define and enforce best practices for Windows desktop development: code architecture, performance optimization, memory management, responsive UI, and cross-version compatibility (Windows 10/11+)
• Drive accessibility integration and validation using Microsoft UI Automation and related Windows accessibility frameworks, ensuring robust screen-reader support, keyboard navigation, and inclusive design
• Collaborate with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and stakeholders to shape feature planning and platform roadmap
• Own the full feature lifecycle from conception through design, implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance
• Diagnose and resolve complex technical challenges including performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems
• Conduct code reviews, mentor engineers, and make architecture-level decisions

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 3+ years of Windows desktop application development using Windows App SDK, WinUI (or similar), C#, and XAML; experience with native Windows code (C++, Win32/WinRT/COM) is ideal
• Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed (.NET) and native code
• Proven track record shipping production-quality desktop applications with emphasis on reliability, performance, and maintainability
• Strong experience with Windows accessibility APIs (Microsoft UI Automation or similar) and commitment to inclusive software
• Excellent software engineering fundamentals: OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, multi-threading, and asynchronous programming
• Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, and driving architecture decisions
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams
• User-centric mindset focused on polished, intuitive, accessible experiences

Preferred/Bonus:

• Experience with automated UI testing frameworks (unit, integration, UI automation)
• Performance optimization expertise (memory usage, startup time, rendering, high-DPI support)
• Localization, globalization, right-to-left UI support, and internationalization experience
• Familiarity with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, and error monitoring
• Experience shaping CI/CD workflows and deployment strategies for desktop applications
• Track record of long-term ownership including maintenance, refactoring, and technical debt management
