San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) is seeking adjunct and substitute instructors to lead engaging literature courses for older adult learners in our non-credit continuing education program. This full-time position is based in San Diego, San Diego County, and offers a meaningful opportunity to share your passion for literature with an intellectually vibrant, lifelong-learning community.
About the Role
In this adjunct or substitute instructor position, you'll facilitate literature classes specifically designed for older adults seeking to deepen their engagement with great works and contemporary texts. Whether teaching regularly scheduled courses or providing substitute coverage as needed, you'll create a welcoming, discussion-centered classroom where older adult learners feel valued and intellectually challenged. Your role supports the District's commitment to accessible, community-focused continuing education.
What You'll Do
- Develop and deliver literature instruction tailored to adult learners, emphasizing discussion, literary analysis, and collaborative discovery
- Curate course materials—from classic and literary canon to contemporary and diverse authors—appropriate to older adult interests and learning levels
- Build an inclusive classroom culture that honors the life experiences and perspectives of mature learners
- Assess student learning through participation, discussion contributions, and written reflection
- Differentiate instruction to meet varied learning needs and backgrounds within the older adult population
- Partner with continuing education colleagues on curriculum development and student support initiatives
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree with a major in Literature or a closely related field, earned from a regionally accredited institution
- Thirty (30) hours or two (2) semester units of coursework in understanding older adult learners, needs, and educational contexts, completed at an accredited institution or pre-approved by SDCCD
- Proven ability to teach literature effectively to adult and older adult audiences
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; genuine passion for working with mature learners
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and best practices in continuing education instruction
- Reliability and adaptability, particularly for those serving in the substitute instructor pool
