Nix / NixOS / Nixpkgs Software Engineering Intern

Responsibilities

As a Software Engineering Intern with our client—a confidential technology consultancy—you will support the design, implementation, and maintenance of Nix-based development and deployment environments. You will assist in writing and refining Nix and NixOS configurations, automate build and deployment workflows, and integrate Nix with existing software projects. Day-to-day tasks include collaborating with engineers on backend services, troubleshooting environment and dependency issues, and documenting configuration and tooling. This is a fully remote internship based in Lüneburg, Germany, where you will work closely with the engineering team and gain hands-on experience with modern infrastructure-as-code practices.

What We're Looking For

• Strong foundational knowledge in Computer Science, including algorithms, data structures, and operating systems
• Exposure to software development and programming, with experience in at least one high-level language (Rust experience is a plus)
• Understanding of back-end web development concepts, such as APIs, microservices, and server-side frameworks
• Familiarity with functional programming principles and their practical application in codebases
• Interest in Nix / NixOS / Nixpkgs, reproducible builds, DevOps, and infrastructure as code
• Ability to learn quickly, work in a team setting, and communicate clearly about technical topics
• Comfort working remotely in Germany and collaborating in a cross-functional engineering environment
• Must be a German resident and eligible for either a voluntary internship (Freiwilliges Praktikum) if you do not have a completed apprenticeship or university degree, or a mandatory internship (Pflichtpraktikum) as part of a degree program
