Graduate Physicist

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential R&D consultancy seeking a graduate physicist to join their applied science team. This role is ideal for recent graduates or those completing their degree in the current academic year who are passionate about solving complex technical problems across healthcare, defence, and energy sectors.

You will work on diverse projects with a focus on optical and photonic systems, applying scientific principles to real-world challenges and continuously expanding your technical expertise.

Responsibilities

• Tackle complex technical problems requiring physics expertise across multiple industry verticals
• Develop novel optical and photonic systems for client applications
• Conduct laboratory work alongside desk-based analysis and simulation
• Perform design, simulation, and prototyping of custom measurement systems
• Contribute to reverse engineering and technical analysis projects
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative solutions
• Document findings and communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Physics or closely related discipline with strong academic credentials
• Hands-on laboratory experience combined with analytical capabilities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Collaborative working style and team orientation
• Ability to obtain UK Security Check level clearance and work in the UK without restrictions

Desired Experience (through university research, placements, or personal projects):

• Practical work with optical and photonic systems, including free-space optics, fibre-optic systems, or photonic devices
• Experience with electronics and radio frequency systems
• Familiarity with finite-element simulation tools such as Ansys Maxwell or Ansys Fluent
• Custom numerical simulation experience using Python or MATLAB, ideally with lab validation of results
• Demonstrated interest in practical R&D through projects or research work
