Backend Engineer, Subscriptions

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential food delivery technology organization based in London. They're seeking a Backend Engineer to join their Subscriptions division, working on loyalty and membership systems that serve millions of users globally. This is a unique chance to join an engineering team operating at the frontier of AI-first development practices.

The role sits within a cross-functional subscriptions team collaborating with engineers across multiple international offices. You'll build and evolve the core capabilities that power subscription programmes across multiple markets, working on high-impact features that directly affect user retention and engagement at massive scale.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship backend systems and APIs for subscription features end-to-end, from conception through production deployment
• Implement AI-first development workflows, leveraging agentic coding tools to accelerate delivery while maintaining code quality and reliability
• Collaborate with mobile, web, product, design, and data teams to deliver integrated subscription experiences
• Build internal tooling and abstractions that enable AI-assisted development across the engineering organization
• Ensure systems run reliably at scale through comprehensive testing, observability, and monitoring practices
• Coordinate with engineering teams across multiple time zones to align technical approaches and share learnings
• Drive projects forward autonomously, communicating progress and trade-offs clearly to stakeholders
• Stay current with emerging AI models, agents, and development tools, evaluating what's genuinely useful for the team

What We're Looking For

• Strong software engineering fundamentals with proven experience building and shipping products that operate at scale
• Active engagement with AI development tools and agentic coding workflows—you should be experimenting with these technologies daily and have formed opinions about their effective use
• Deep understanding of backend architecture, testing strategies, reliability engineering, and production operations
• Experience designing workflows where AI agents handle entire task loops, thinking in terms of orchestration between human review and agent ownership
• Ownership mentality: you drive initiatives forward, identify gaps, and take action without waiting for direction
• Excellent communication skills for working across disciplines and international teams
• Curiosity about how AI is reshaping software development practices and willingness to challenge conventional approaches
• Product-minded thinking—you care about user outcomes as much as code quality
• Comfort working in fast-paced, iterative environments where shipping quickly and learning from production is valued
