Senior Staff Software Engineer (R14082)

Oportun seeks a Senior Staff Software Engineer to lead our technical strategy in Mexico. In this full-time role, you'll design innovative financial systems, guide technical direction across multiple teams, and mentor engineers building the platform that expands access to affordable credit.

The Opportunity

Lead technical vision and strategy at a high level of impact and autonomy. You'll shape the architecture of scalable systems serving millions, mentor other senior technical leaders, and influence our engineering roadmap. Partner with product, operations, risk, and data teams to solve complex problems. This role blends deep systems expertise with organizational influence—you'll guide your peers, identify strategic opportunities, and drive change across functional boundaries.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior technical leadership to multiple teams and system domains
• Architect and design reliable, secure, scalable financial technology systems
• Lead complex cross-functional initiatives from design through production
• Partner with product, engineering, data, risk, and business stakeholders to align solutions with organizational goals
• Evaluate and improve system reliability, performance, scalability, security, and developer experience
• Guide backend service, API, and distributed system design and implementation
• Influence technical strategy, roadmap prioritization, and resource allocation
• Establish and promote engineering standards for design, testing, deployment, monitoring, and operational excellence
• Mentor engineers and technical leads, raising execution quality and ownership
• Advise teams on tradeoffs between speed, quality, reliability, security, and maintainability
• Support modernization efforts and integration of legacy and modern systems
• Leverage AI-enabled tools and automation to enhance development workflows and productivity
• Identify opportunities where AI or automation can improve customer experience or operational efficiency
• Participate in production support, incident analysis, and infrastructure resilience improvements

Who We're Looking For

• 12+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Proven ability designing and operating large-scale distributed systems
• History of providing technical leadership across multiple teams or domains
• Deep experience with backend services, APIs, cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure), and databases
• Proficiency in Java, Python, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, Kotlin, or similar languages
• Strong expertise in system design, architecture, scalability, reliability, and operational excellence
• Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, logging, and production operations
• Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction without formal authority
• Excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences
• Experience mentoring engineers and improving technical execution
• Strong ownership mindset and ability to drive cross-functional initiatives to completion
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and automation platforms
• Practical understanding of responsible AI applications in engineering workflows
• Preferred: telephony and contact center systems; fintech, lending, or financial services experience; legacy system modernization
