About This Opportunity

We are representing a well-funded assistive technology company seeking a Software Engineer for their Platform team in London. Our client operates in a fully distributed model and serves tens of millions of users globally across mobile, desktop, and web platforms.

The Platform team owns mission-critical backend systems including payments, subscriptions, authentication, consumption tracking, analytics, and public-facing APIs. These systems demand absolute correctness—subscription state must remain consistent across multiple client platforms and third-party billing systems, metering must be precise enough for billing while remaining cost-effective at scale, and external customers depend on consistent latency and uptime.

This role rewards engineers who make systems more autonomous and resilient over time. Growth comes from taking on larger scope by making current systems require less intervention, not from climbing a separate management ladder.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and own APIs supporting payments, subscriptions, authentication, consumption tracking, and public-facing services
• Inherit existing services and improve their performance, cost efficiency, and reliability
• Establish correctness before deployment and implement ongoing validation mechanisms
• Automate operational tasks to free capacity for higher-value work
• Create reusable patterns and documentation that enable team-wide adoption
• Design B2B and enterprise integrations for external customers building on the platform
• Collaborate with product, mobile, and web teams to ensure backend architecture supports roadmap requirements

What We're Looking For

• Strong backend development experience with TypeScript and Node.js (required)
• Direct hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform; working knowledge of AWS, Azure, or similar cloud providers
• Track record of delegating or automating previous responsibilities and leveraging that capacity for greater impact
• Active use of AI tooling in daily workflows with clear decision frameworks for when to use automation versus manual review
• Habit of verifying results against source systems (logs, database state, actual requests) rather than relying on summaries
• Sound judgment about scope management and the ability to articulate why certain work should not be pursued
• Preference for receiving constructive feedback over defending initial positions
• Preferred: Experience with Docker and containerized deployments
• Preferred: Experience deploying high-availability applications on Kubernetes
