Director of Product Management – Data Streaming

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential industrial IoT software organization headquartered in Germany. They are seeking a Director of Product Management – Data Streaming to lead the strategic direction of their core messaging and connectivity platform—the foundation that powers intelligent operations for global manufacturing and industrial clients.

This is a high-impact role at the intersection of operational technology, enterprise infrastructure, and AI-driven automation. You'll own the product strategy for a mission-critical data streaming layer that runs in production at Tier 1 manufacturers worldwide. The platform is based on MQTT and distributed edge-to-cloud architecture, enabling real-time industrial data connectivity at scale.

You'll begin as an individual contributor with clear opportunity to build and lead a product team as the portfolio grows.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute product strategy for the data streaming platform, balancing enterprise customer commitments with next-generation architectural investments (cloud-native, multi-tenancy, agent-first design)
• Own the extensibility roadmap—ensuring field teams can build integrations efficiently while maintaining a disciplined process for graduating capabilities into core product
• Champion Agent Experience (AX) as a design principle: API-first provisioning, OpenAPI coverage, and elimination of unnecessary infrastructure complexity
• Drive measurable business outcomes across adoption, revenue, usage metrics, and customer satisfaction
• Partner with engineering leadership to ensure delivery excellence for mission-critical releases running entire manufacturing plants
• Collaborate with GTM teams (Sales, Customer Success, Alliances, Product Marketing) at director and VP levels
• Manage strategic customer relationships and escalations; present roadmaps to senior leadership and occasionally C-suite
• Work with product data analysts to instrument the platform effectively and report progress through data-backed storytelling
• Identify organizational bottlenecks and propose scalable process improvements
• Make difficult prioritization decisions, including when to terminate features that don't deliver desired outcomes

What We're Looking For

Required Experience:

• 8–15 years total experience with significant time in product management or consulting
• Track record with established enterprise infrastructure products—real revenue, demanding customers, growth trajectory
• Experience navigating tension between current commitments and architectural investments for next-phase adoption
• Data-driven product development using quantitative and qualitative methods
• Budget and resource management across teams

Domain Expertise (Core Requirements):

• Deep familiarity with message-oriented middleware and event-driven architectures—MQTT, Kafka, Solace, RabbitMQ, or similar distributed messaging platforms
• Understanding of throughput, latency, ordering guarantees, QoS tradeoffs, and design decisions that differentiate streaming technologies
• Meaningful OT/IT convergence experience: PLC communication, OPC-UA, Modbus, SCADA, MES—through PM, systems integration, or hands-on industrial work
• Credibility speaking to both plant engineers and IT architects
• Smart manufacturing / Industry 4.0 understanding: device fleet management, facility instrumentation, edge-to-cloud operational data movement
• Experience with Tier 1 industrial companies (automotive, pharma, energy, discrete manufacturing) strongly preferred

Highly Valued:

• IoT, robotics, connected vehicle, energy systems, or industrial IoT experience
• Self-managed enterprise software: on-premises/edge deployment, LTS cycles, version management, upgrade paths
• 4+ years people management, including distributed teams across geographies
• PLG for infrastructure/developer products: trial flows, licensing, activation metrics, conversion funnels
• Distributed systems appreciation: reliability, scalability, clustering, observability at scale
