Lead Platform Engineer

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential UK fintech organization in their search for a Lead Platform Engineer based in Milton Keynes. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you'll own the architecture and delivery of cloud infrastructure that serves the entire engineering organization.

You'll be the senior technical leader for a core platform domain, setting technical direction while remaining deeply involved in infrastructure as code, pipelines, and production systems. This isn't a pure management role—expect to spend significant time building alongside your team while making the architectural decisions that are too consequential to delegate.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture of cloud platform infrastructure including landing zones, network topology, container runtime, and integration patterns following Well-Architected Framework principles
• Build reusable core infrastructure through Terraform modules, deployment templates, and platform services that enable teams to provision production-grade infrastructure with embedded security, networking, and observability
• Deliver and manage all infrastructure through Terraform and secure CI/CD pipelines, ensuring every change is automated, repeatable, version-controlled, tested, and reversible
• Set and evolve engineering standards for code quality, peer review, policy as code, and release management across the platform function
• Embed security, governance, and compliance throughout the platform lifecycle, implementing effective policies, access controls, encryption, and monitoring standards
• Collaborate with Security, Engineering, Risk, and Compliance teams to ensure platforms meet regulatory and control requirements with auditable evidence
• Own availability, reliability, and cost optimization for the platform, backed by service objectives, actionable monitoring, and tested recovery procedures
• Lead complex incident response, conduct root-cause analysis, and drive systemic improvements rather than one-off fixes
• Lead, mentor, and develop platform engineers while remaining hands-on in architecture, design reviews, and solving the hardest technical problems

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Strong track record architecting and running production Azure environments at scale, including landing zone design, private networking, containerized compute, API management, and multi-zone resilience patterns
• Extensive hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure as code, containerized runtimes, identity management, and observability
• Production accountability experience for business-critical systems, comfortable handling incidents and on-call responsibilities
• Product mindset for developer experience—ability to design platforms engineers want to adopt rather than are forced to use
• Experience treating regulatory and security requirements as engineering constraints to design around
• Preference for proven, well-understood solutions over complexity; willingness to remove features and reduce scope

Desirable:

• Architecture or engineering experience with Google Cloud Platform
• Experience in regulated, high-assurance, or security-sensitive environments
• Knowledge of Kubernetes, container platforms, serverless services, and cloud-native application patterns
• Experience with Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or comparable CI/CD technologies
• Familiarity with FinOps, operational resilience, regulatory compliance, and cloud-control frameworks
• Relevant Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Terraform, security, or architecture certifications
