Senior Underwriting Officer, Construction

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential insurance organization seeking a Senior Underwriting Officer to focus on Construction accounts. This role supports some of the largest contractors in the U.S., providing technical expertise across Primary Casualty lines including Workers' Compensation, General Liability, and Auto for annual practice and wrap-up programs. You'll serve as a trusted advisor to frontline underwriting teams, handle formal referrals, and contribute to portfolio strategy development.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert technical underwriting assistance and formal referral approval across multiple casualty lines (auto, general liability, workers' compensation, and lead/excess) in Large Construction
• Interact independently with field underwriters and underwriting managers on mandatory referral cases and voluntary consultation items
• Ensure continuity and alignment between Primary Casualty and Excess placements
• Support leadership on complex transactions and serve as trusted advisor on exposure analysis, coverage, pricing, and financial elements
• Monitor and recommend improvements to underwriting decision frameworks including referrals and technical reviews
• Evaluate portfolio performance regularly, identifying drivers of performance, risks, and opportunities in collaboration with Underwriting Leaders
• Drive underwriting technical excellence and work with leaders to identify and resolve issues
• Identify product and service enhancements, underwriter capability development opportunities, and coordinate improvements
• Model effective collaboration within and across teams and with stakeholders including Claims, Actuarial, and Product Teams

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in a related field
• 10+ years of relevant experience in underwriting, claims, or reinsurance
• Expert-level knowledge of coverage forms, exclusions, and exposure analysis
• Advanced knowledge of Construction programs and experience operating within multiple industry segments
• Strong understanding of pricing, structure, rating, loss forecasting, and credit risk
• Familiarity with insurance operations, claims, finance and actuarial concepts, regulatory environment, loss control, and reinsurance
• Proven ability to coach and develop others
• Superior communication skills including written, verbal, presentation, and listening
• Strong collaboration skills with willingness to assess all sides of an issue and bring in subject matter experts
• Solutions-oriented mindset with commitment to achieving operational and financial objectives
• Demonstrated ability to influence others both internally and externally (brokers/customers)
• Current knowledge of market trends and developments
