Staff Data Engineer

Overview

We are representing a fast-growing European AI legal technology company seeking a Staff Data Engineer to take technical ownership of their data platform. This is a senior individual contributor role—roughly 70% hands-on building, 30% defining, documenting, and explaining—with direct access to engineering leadership. You'll own the pipelines, warehouse, and metric definitions that guide business decisions.

The platform is already in production (ClickHouse, dbt, Python EL pipelines, S3 data lake, GitHub Actions orchestration) and serves hundreds of clients across Europe. Your mission is to make it trustworthy: reliable ingestion, correct transformations, and historical trends that represent what actually happened, not nightly re-derivations.

Responsibilities

• Own the data platform end to end: ingestion, raw layer, ClickHouse warehouse, and the dbt transformation project
• Ensure data reliability and correctness so leadership can trust the numbers they see
• Define and maintain business-critical metrics (customer health scores, cohort analysis, retention) including denominators, eligibility rules, and known limitations
• Translate business questions from Customer Success, Sales, Product, and executives into durable, defensible metrics
• Manage cost and complexity as the customer base scales roughly 4x annually
• Establish standards for data work: one authoritative written definition per leadership-visible metric, clear conventions, and documentation that scales with the team
• Work directly with non-technical stakeholders, including C-level, to explain trade-offs and hold technical positions without losing the room

What We're Looking For

Technical expertise:

• Substantial production ownership of a data warehouse and transformation layer (ClickHouse in production is required)
• Deep dbt experience: incremental models, snapshots, tests, macros, CI/CD—ideally you've inherited and improved someone else's project
• Python data engineering: EL tooling, S3, CI-based orchestration owned end to end with no platform team backing you
• Product event streams (PostHog, Amplitude, Segment, Mixpanel or similar) and understanding of identity resolution and how breakage propagates downstream

Judgement and ownership:

• You have defined a business KPI end to end and defended it to non-technical people—this is the differentiator for our client
• Analytical rigor: correct cohorts, stated denominators, honest sample sizes, and willingness to say "we can't tell yet, and here's why"
• You act without waiting for tickets and can name work you chose to stop doing
• Comfortable presenting to senior stakeholders and holding a technical line

Nice to have: BI tool administration (Metabase), CRM/billing systems as sources, dlt, GDPR-driven deletion workflows, Grafana, German language, B2B SaaS or legal-tech domain experience, or experience designing for non-technical users querying data through AI tools.

Location: Germany (fully remote within CET +/-2). Full-time employment.
