Intern Researcher – Human-AI Experience Design

Huawei Technologies Canada Co., Ltd. is seeking an Intern Researcher in Human-AI Experience Design at our Markham, Ontario location. This internship offers an opportunity to design experiences that enable effective collaboration between people and AI systems.

The Opportunity

Our research team works across the globe to reimagine how people interact with intelligent technology. We investigate how users engage with artificial intelligence through voice, visual, touch, and gesture interfaces across smartphones, wearables, and emerging devices. Our approach combines rigorous user research with iterative prototyping, ensuring that innovative solutions reach real products. As an intern, you will directly contribute to defining interaction models and design frameworks that support meaningful human-AI collaboration.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Conceive and develop novel interaction paradigms for intelligent software products, spanning conversational AI, intelligent assistants, guided task workflows, and seamless multi-device experiences.

• Convert advanced AI functions into approachable, engaging user experiences through deliberate interface design, content strategy, and experience architecture.

• Create working prototypes and interactive proof-of-concepts using design platforms such as Figma, ProtoPie, and Framer to validate design ideas early.

• Conduct user-centred research initiatives including design validation, usability testing, exploratory interviews, and comparative benchmarking to guide experience decisions.

• Work alongside colleagues to identify emerging interaction approaches, map user scenarios and workflows, and uncover new opportunities within intelligent systems.

• Assess how users wish to communicate with AI systems, govern system responses, preserve their influence over intelligent features, establish trust, and interact through spoken language, physical touch, visual recognition, and adaptive contextual cues.

• Establish design standards, foundational principles, narrative user journeys, and strategic vision for next-generation intelligent and multimodal experiences.

• Stay informed about emerging developments in AI interfaces, intelligent system design, and novel computing paradigms, then adapt these insights into practical design directions and experimental prototypes.

Who We're Looking For

• Currently pursuing or holding a degree in Human-Computer Interaction, User Experience Design, Computer Science, or a related discipline.

• Hands-on experience or familiarity with design and rapid prototyping tools, including Figma, ProtoPie, Framer, or comparable platforms.

• Genuine interest in research practices and methods for understanding user behaviour and needs.

• Strong communication abilities, both written and verbal.

• Familiarity with artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, and contemporary computing technologies.

• Capacity to work effectively in cross-functional teams and contribute thoughtfully to group problem-solving.
