Staff Machine Learning Scientist

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI technology organization seeking a Staff Machine Learning Scientist to join their London team. Our client operates at the forefront of applied machine learning, building production systems that deliver measurable customer impact through cutting-edge algorithms and rapid iteration cycles.

This is a senior technical leadership role where you'll drive ML innovation from research through production deployment, working closely with product and engineering teams in a highly collaborative, product-focused environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical initiatives across the full ML lifecycle, from problem framing through production deployment and measurement
• Identify high-impact opportunities where machine learning can create customer value
• Conduct exploratory data analysis and research to deeply understand problem domains
• Research and select appropriate algorithms and tools, balancing pragmatism with cutting-edge innovation
• Perform offline evaluation to validate algorithmic approaches before production
• Collaborate with engineers to transition prototypes into production systems
• Design measurement frameworks and socialize learnings to inform iteration
• Play an active role in hiring, mentoring, and career development of other engineers
• Raise technical standards across performance, reliability, and operational excellence
• Partner across disciplines including Product, Design, and Engineering to deliver excellent ML products

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 5-8 years of applied machine learning experience
• Previous background in a senior or staff role (data science, software development, or academic research)
• Demonstrated, significant impact your work has had on products and teams
• Strong programming skills
• Experience as the primary technical leader for a team
• Strong communication skills within engineering teams and across disciplines
• Comfort operating in ambiguous problem spaces
• Advanced education in ML or related field (typically MSc or equivalent)
• Strong scientific thinking and experimental design skills

Highly valued experience:

• Track record shipping production ML products
• PhD or other research environment experience
• Deep expertise in applicable ML areas such as NLP, deep learning, Bayesian methods, reinforcement learning, or clustering
• Strong statistics or mathematics background
• Data visualization skills, SQL, matplotlib, and related tools
