Staff Engineer – Content Platform

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential global streaming platform in their search for a Staff Engineer to provide architectural leadership for their media infrastructure. This role is based in London and offers significant flexibility for remote work.

Our client operates one of the world's largest content platforms, processing and delivering media to millions of listeners globally. The Media domain you'll join is responsible for the complete media pipeline—from content ingestion through transcoding, packaging, storage, delivery, and playback.

As Staff Engineer, you'll shape technical direction across multiple engineering teams, drive large-scale initiatives spanning codec rollouts and delivery infrastructure, and serve as a key architectural voice for media systems at internet scale.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive long-term architectural direction for the media pipeline across the content platform
• Lead large-scale technical initiatives spanning multiple squads and organizations, including media delivery optimization, codec implementations, and playback capabilities
• Partner with engineering managers, product managers, and senior engineers to align technical strategy with product priorities, reliability goals, and cost efficiency
• Guide architectural decisions across media ingestion, transcoding, packaging, storage, content delivery, and playback systems
• Author and review RFCs, architecture decision records, and technical design documents that guide engineering teams and leadership
• Mentor senior engineers across the organization to raise technical quality, architectural thinking, and engineering excellence
• Apply cost-aware engineering principles by understanding how media architecture impacts compute, storage, CDN utilization, and platform sustainability

What We're Looking For

• Deep expertise building large-scale media platforms spanning audio, video, encoding, transcoding, packaging, delivery, and playback technologies
• Proven track record leading architecture across multiple engineering teams and influencing technical direction beyond immediate organizational boundaries
• Significant experience designing and operating distributed systems at internet scale, including high-throughput media processing, large-scale storage, and globally distributed delivery infrastructure
• Strong understanding of architectural trade-offs between codecs, packaging formats, playback technologies, storage, networking, and infrastructure costs
• Demonstrated success leading multi-quarter technical initiatives from proposal through implementation and organization-wide adoption
• Excellent communication skills with ability to convey technical ideas through well-structured RFCs, design documents, and architectural decision records
• Collaborative approach that builds trust through technical credibility and brings together teams with different priorities
• Passion for mentoring experienced engineers and developing organizational technical capability
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure providers, CDN vendors, and large-scale media delivery ecosystems highly valued
