About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential workflow orchestration platform provider seeking a Software Engineer, Backend to join their Core/API & Process Automation team. This is a rare opportunity to work on genuinely consequential distributed systems—an event-sourced workflow engine that executes business-critical processes for thousands of organizations worldwide.

You'll work at the core of the platform, where every improvement you make propagates through the entire ecosystem. This isn't another CRUD application—you'll tackle real distributed systems challenges including event sourcing, concurrency, ordering, and replay logic where data integrity is non-negotiable and processes must never fail.

The team is building cutting-edge capabilities including enabling AI agents to drive workflow automation. You'll own well-scoped features end-to-end, ship open-source code, and grow rapidly alongside world-class engineers who are deeply invested in building the best workflow engine in the industry.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve features in the event-sourced engine and its REST/gRPC APIs using CQRS patterns
• Own features end-to-end—design, implement, test, and ship production code
• Contribute to high-impact engine capabilities like process instance suspension/resumption, AI agent integration, and variable tracing
• Design clean, backward-compatible APIs with strong developer ergonomics
• Optimize processing and data-access patterns across distributed data stores including RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and Postgres
• Build observability into your features and participate in code reviews to maintain quality
• Participate in support rotation and on-call as you ramp up
• Proactively identify technical debt and improvement opportunities

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 2+ years of professional backend engineering experience
• Solid understanding of event-driven systems with genuine eagerness to master event sourcing and distributed systems concepts
• Working knowledge of consistency, ordering, and failure handling in distributed environments
• Strong API design skills (REST) with awareness of backward compatibility concerns
• Product-focused mindset—you care about user outcomes, not just completing tickets
• Self-directed work style: manage your own time, drive work forward independently, and communicate progress clearly in a remote/async environment
• High growth orientation—actively seeks unfamiliar challenges to accelerate learning
• Clear written communication skills for remote collaboration

Nice to Have:

• Experience with workflow automation or process orchestration platforms (BPMN or similar)
• Query optimization experience with Elasticsearch/OpenSearch and relational databases
• Familiarity with observability tooling (logging, metrics, tracing)
• JVM experience
