About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential fintech client seeking a Data Scientist to join their Credit Risk Modelling team. This is a hybrid role based in London, with remote options available within the UK.
You'll work on credit models that sit at the core of our client's lending operations—the models that determine lending decisions, terms, and portfolio growth. This is a rare opportunity to shape probabilistic machine learning systems that directly drive business outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Lead credit risk and customer lifetime value modelling projects from conception through deployment
- Maintain and enhance production credit models, balancing incremental improvements with fundamental research
- Conduct causal estimation studies to understand how lending terms shape customer outcomes
- Build multi-stage credit models with information propagation across prediction stages
- Explore novel modelling frameworks that could unify separate model systems
- Prototype rapidly using AI tools to tackle research questions previously considered too costly
- Interface with analytics functions across the organisation to support decision-making
- Critically evaluate model outputs and defend analytical choices under scrutiny
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Strong statistical foundations from a quantitative field, with deep understanding of probability, uncertainty, and calibration
- Research mindset—you actively explore new approaches and expect R&D time to yield breakthrough improvements
- Excellent judgement when evaluating model outputs, whether from colleagues or AI tools
- Analytical ownership: you take ambiguous problems end-to-end, iterate quickly, and update on evidence rather than chasing perfection
- AI fluency: you use AI as a primary tool for prototyping, automation, and research that wouldn't otherwise be viable
- Clear communication skills, adapting technical detail appropriately for different audiences
Bonus:
- Experience in credit risk, lending, or customer lifetime value modelling
- Track record building and shipping supervised ML models end-to-end through production
- Proficiency with non-linear methods, cost functions, and inductive biases
- Experience with Bayesian methods including hierarchical models, MCMC, or Bayesian updating
- Time series modelling experience with autocorrelation, drift, or seasonality
- Python proficiency
