About This Opportunity
Our talent team is representing a confidential Fortune 50 healthcare payer organization seeking a Director of Engineering to lead AI-first transformation across clinical technology systems. This is a rare opportunity to architect how enterprise healthcare engineering fundamentally changes over the next decade—embedding AI-assisted development, agentic workflows, and modern data platforms directly into mission-critical delivery.
You'll lead engineering teams responsible for enterprise integrations and clinical data platforms supporting millions of members through Utilization Management and Care Management systems, with hard go-live milestones in 2026-2027. This role carries direct executive visibility and partners closely with senior technology and clinical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Lead and scale engineering teams responsible for enterprise integrations, clinical data platforms, and payer/provider interoperability (APIs, HL7, FHIR, EDI/X12)
- Own the AI-first engineering transformation agenda—drive adoption of AI-assisted development tools, agentic workflows, and automation across the software development lifecycle from requirements through production support
- Provide technical and delivery leadership for large-scale platform transformation programs, partnering with multi-vendor delivery ecosystems to ensure accountability
- Drive architecture and delivery for clinical and healthcare data platforms using Databricks and Snowflake
- Champion measurable Return on AI Investment (ROAI)—identify and scale use cases where AI materially compresses delivery timelines, testing cycles, and operational costs
- Partner with clinical, product, and compliance leaders to translate healthcare operations into scalable, AI-enabled technical solutions
- Build, mentor, and grow high-performing engineering teams, instilling an AI-first mindset and modern engineering culture as a durable organizational capability
- Represent engineering in executive-level conversations on technology transformation, delivery risk, and AI strategy
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- 10+ years of engineering leadership experience
- Demonstrated experience leading AI-first or AI-assisted engineering transformation—adoption of AI development platforms at team or organizational scale
- Strong technical foundation in enterprise integration and interoperability: APIs, HL7, FHIR, EDI/X12
- Experience with modern cloud data platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, or equivalent
- Track record leading engineering teams through large-scale platform transformation, including multi-vendor delivery environments
- Executive-level communication skills—ability to translate technical delivery into business and clinical outcomes for senior leadership
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting payer or clinical operations—Utilization Management, Care Management, HEDIS, STAR Ratings, or Value-Based Care
- Background in healthcare technology environments (payer, provider, or health tech)
- Experience with Medicare Advantage, commercial payer, or Value-Based Care environments
- Cloud platform certification or deep hands-on experience (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
- Experience standing up or scaling an AI Center of Excellence, AI governance framework, or enterprise AI adoption program
- Background leading teams through regulatory-driven transformation (e.g., CMS interoperability mandates)
