Senior SRE – OpenStack & Bare Metal (m/w/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential cloud infrastructure provider seeking a Senior SRE - OpenStack & Bare Metal to join their experienced platform engineering team in Köln, Germany. This is a hands-on role building and operating a production on-premise cloud platform, with significant influence on architecture, automation strategy, and AI-augmented engineering practices.

You'll work with a small, senior team developing an OpenStack-based infrastructure and Kubernetes/GitOps stack that powers a customer-facing cloud platform. The environment actively uses AI-assisted engineering—from spec-driven development to agentic coding workflows, incident response, and automation.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop OpenStack-based on-premise cloud infrastructure with the goal of highly automated bare metal deployment and operations
• Build and operate Infrastructure as Code using Ansible and Terraform, plus Kubernetes and GitOps workflows with FluxCD/ArgoCD—supported by LLMs, agentic workflows, and automated testing/review processes
• Own the complete lifecycle of compute infrastructure from bare metal, firmware, and provisioning through hypervisors and virtual compute nodes, including patching, migrations, host evacuations, capacity rebalancing, and platform stability automation
• Develop AI substrate and self-healing capabilities—structured knowledge bases, agentic workflows for incident triage and capacity planning, progressive automation of operational runbooks
• Design tests for non-regression, performance, and security; document and package solutions; continuously improve the platform based on telemetry, operational experience, and user feedback
• Serve as technical advisor and sparring partner for colleagues on automation, platform engineering, and AI tooling

What We're Looking For

• Several years of practical experience as SRE, Platform Engineer, or DevOps Engineer operating production infrastructure
• Deep hands-on experience with OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Linux on bare metal
• End-to-end compute infrastructure operations experience: firmware/BIOS rollouts, bare-metal provisioning, hardware diagnostics, hypervisors, migrations, host evacuations, graceful drains, and capacity rebalancing
• Active use of AI-assisted engineering in daily work—you deploy LLMs and agentic tools strategically where they add value to development, testing, reviews, or operations, and understand where solid engineering judgment remains critical
• Strong proficiency with Ansible, Terraform, and GitOps workflows (FluxCD or ArgoCD), with experience running automated processes reliably in production
• Experience with Go and/or Python, plus agentic coding environments like Claude Code, Cursor, Aider, or similar tools
• Technical background spanning observability, networking, compute tuning, auto-remediation, security-critical infrastructure, and multi-site cloud environments
• Strong ownership mindset and drive to continuously improve systems, not just operate them
• Ability to share knowledge and clearly communicate complex technical concepts
• Comfortable working in an international environment in English—discussing, documenting, and advancing technical topics with the team
