Senior Design Manager – U&R

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential engineering consultancy working on critical utilities and renewable energy infrastructure projects across the UK. As Senior Design Manager, you will play a central role in multi-disciplinary design delivery across complex, safety-critical environments including power generation, transmission and distribution, water, and industrial utilities.

Working closely with project, commercial, and construction managers, you will ensure designs are fully coordinated, compliant, and aligned to programme, cost, and operational requirements. Key responsibilities include:

• Leading the coordination and technical assurance of multi-disciplinary design outputs, ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulatory frameworks, and client specifications (e.g., DNO/TSO, Ofgem, environmental and planning constraints)
• Managing design delivery against contracted scope, ensuring alignment with project objectives, programme, and budget
• Developing and maintaining integrated design programmes that reflect complex asset interfaces, project sequencing, outages, and commissioning constraints
• Collaborating with stakeholders across highly regulated environments where projects interface with live assets
• Proactively managing risk, particularly in relation to evolving energy and sustainability priorities

What We're Looking For

Our client is seeking an experienced design professional with strong leadership capabilities and a proven track record in utilities or renewable energy infrastructure. You should bring:

• Degree qualification in Engineering or relevant discipline (e.g., Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Architecture)
• Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) and/or RIBA/ARB registration (desirable)
• Relevant leadership or project management qualification (e.g., APM, PRINCE2) desirable
• Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary design teams in technically challenging environments
• Strong stakeholder collaboration skills and experience working with regulated frameworks
• Understanding of DNO/TSO requirements, Ofgem regulations, or similar utilities sector standards

Security Clearance: This position is subject to security clearance or assurance levels. The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance for this role, in line with client and sector requirements.
