Senior Backend Engineer – Golang

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential fintech organization seeking a Senior Backend Engineer with strong Golang experience to join a newly formed Commercial Systems team in Berlin. You will be building critical infrastructure from the ground up, creating systems that automate sales operations, merchant attribution, and commission workflows.

In this role, you will:

• Aggregate data across multiple systems to determine acquisition channels and attribute merchant actions accurately
• Design and implement data models, API contracts, and automated commission calculation systems for sales teams and partner networks
• Build a centralized event log for merchant lifecycle events used across attribution, recommendations, support, and sales functions
• Develop internal tooling and APIs enabling sales representatives and leadership to monitor commissions, manage portfolios, and resolve disputes
• Define and document API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns for cross-team adoption
• Establish testing, observability, and incident response best practices for the squad
• Leverage AI-assisted coding tools strategically while maintaining full accountability for production code

What We're Looking For

Our client needs an engineer who thrives in greenfield environments and can bridge technical and business domains effectively. The ideal candidate brings:

• Strong backend engineering experience in Go, or expertise in typed languages with readiness to ramp up quickly in Golang
• Proven experience designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning, and integration patterns
• Proficiency with relational and analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) and the judgment to select appropriate tools for different use cases
• Hands-on experience building Kafka-based event-driven systems, including event sourcing and change data capture patterns
• Background in auditable, high-trust systems where traceability is critical—fintech, payments, or similar regulated domains strongly preferred
• Track record building services from scratch in early-stage teams with minimal existing context
• Commitment to testing, observability, and incident response as foundational engineering practices
• Resourcefulness and adaptability with end-to-end ownership mindset
• Ability to translate ambiguous business problems into clear engineering work and communicate trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Pragmatic judgment knowing when to ship quickly versus when deeper investment is warranted
• Natural mentorship instincts and desire to elevate team capabilities

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and are competitive with Berlin market rates for senior backend engineering roles in fintech.
