Senior Software Engineer – Transaction Processing (Java, AWS, DynamoDB)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential payments technology company seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Transaction Processing team in Berlin. Our client operates a critical payment processing platform that serves major global commerce players. This is a high-impact role where you'll build and maintain core payment gateway infrastructure at massive scale.

As a senior engineer, you'll own products end-to-end—from design through production deployment—while working with cutting-edge cloud technologies. You'll be part of an agile, collaborative team that values knowledge sharing, pair programming, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain the primary payment processing engine exposed via REST API
• Own end-to-end products and services from initial design through production rollout
• Execute with a "you build it, you run it" mindset, including participation in on-call rotation
• Share knowledge and develop creative solutions while helping teams evolve best practices
• Collaborate closely through pair programming, asynchronous communication (ADRs, RFCs), and brainstorming sessions
• Solve real customer problems at scale using modern technologies
• Ensure the platform remains fully-featured, scalable, reliable, cost-efficient, secure, and auditable

What We're Looking For

Required Experience & Skills:

• Results-oriented, collaborative, and pragmatic mindset
• Proven experience designing and building scalable products and services
• Strong motivation and appetite for problem-solving
• Excellent ability to break down complex problems into manageable, deliverable pieces
• Outstanding written and visual communication skills to document and explain technical concepts
• Working proficiency in English

Technical Requirements:

• Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Boot
• Experience building REST APIs
• Hands-on experience with AWS cloud components including EKS, DynamoDB, Kinesis, and OpenSearch
• Deep understanding of event-driven microservice architecture
• Experience with observability tools such as Datadog
• Infrastructure as Code experience via Terraform

Nice to Have:

• Payments industry background
• Hands-on experience with AI as a software engineer
