About This Opportunity
We are representing a leading international humanitarian organization in their search for a Public Engagement Specialist on a 12-month contract basis. Our client focuses on poverty alleviation and places special emphasis on supporting women and girls globally. This role will lead the Canadian public engagement pillar of a major sexual and reproductive health and rights initiative spanning multiple African countries.
As Public Engagement Specialist, you will develop and execute strategies to increase Canadian youth awareness and engagement in global health equity issues. You'll manage a cohort of Youth Public Engagement Champions, oversee multi-channel communications campaigns, and collaborate with youth advisory boards in East Africa. This position offers meaningful impact, international collaboration, and the opportunity to shape youth engagement programming at a respected global organization.
Responsibilities
- Lead strategic planning, delivery, monitoring and reporting for the Canadian public engagement component of a multi-country health rights project
- Develop work plans, strategies and processes to increase youth awareness of and engagement in global health equity issues
- Oversee development and delivery of public engagement activities including multi-channel content, awareness campaigns, educational initiatives and in-person events
- Manage the Youth Public Engagement Champions program, including recruitment, lifecycle management of two-year cohorts, and providing ongoing direction, guidance and professional development to six youth champions
- Collaborate with Youth Advisory Board members in Kenya, Uganda and Zambia to facilitate knowledge exchange and strengthen connections between Canadian youth and international project participants
- Serve on project matrix teams and participate in project management meetings to represent the public engagement pillar
- Research and develop a broader youth engagement approach for the organization, identifying evidence-based opportunities for long-term audience growth
- Manage relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders, partners and vendors
- Prepare donor reports and project documentation
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Minimum 4 years' experience in communications, public engagement or related field (journalism, public relations, international relations)
- Degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience
- Demonstrated experience designing, leading or evolving youth engagement programs
- Experience providing leadership, guidance or mentorship to youth or volunteer teams
- Project management and donor reporting experience
- Experience managing relationships with diverse stakeholders, partners and vendors
- Knowledge of international development issues and familiarity with gender equality and/or sexual and reproductive health rights programming
- Superior written and verbal communication and presentation skills in English
- Experience with digital communications, social media and web content
- Strong attention to detail with capacity to revise and correct texts
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
- Ability to travel within Canada and internationally
Preferred:
- French language skills (written and oral)
- Podcasting production and editing skills
- Photography skills and ability to create compelling visual communications materials
- Presentation design capabilities
- Previous experience working in an international NGO or development contexts

Compensation and Benefits
This is a 12-month contract position based in Canada. Our client offers a comprehensive package including:
- Starting salary between $74,000 - $79,000 CAD
