Senior Python Engineer, Platform Libraries (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential laboratory automation client in München seeking a Senior Python Engineer to develop platform libraries that power instrument connectivity and automation workflows. You will build the shared Python libraries that enable connector development, working directly with physical lab equipment in a Munich-based workshop environment.

This is a senior individual contributor role where you'll own the core libraries as a product while simultaneously shipping production connectors against real hardware. Your work will directly enable faster connector development for automation engineers integrating diverse lab instruments.

Responsibilities

• Own and maintain shared Python libraries including connector development kits and core infrastructure used across production systems
• Build production-ready connectors end-to-end from specifications through physical device testing to customer deployment
• Extract common patterns from connector implementations and promote them into reusable library features
• Reverse-engineer instrument protocols when vendor documentation is incomplete or incorrect using packet captures and physical testing
• Define quality standards and testing requirements for connector releases
• Create documentation enabling external contributors to build connectors independently
• Debug protocol implementations against physical instruments in the Munich workshop
• Collaborate with automation engineers and research scientists to understand real-world integration requirements
• Manage library releases, deprecations, and CI/CD across production connector deployments

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 5+ years production Python experience designing APIs and libraries consumed by other developers
• Hands-on experience debugging real protocols against physical hardware (gRPC, serial, TCP, OPC UA, CAN, USB, or similar)
• Demonstrated ability to reverse-engineer undocumented or poorly documented protocols and interfaces
• Experience building SDKs, libraries, or internal platforms that improve developer productivity
• Strong skills in async Python, typing, packaging, and testing methodologies
• Located in or willing to relocate to München (regular onsite presence required for hardware work)
• Ability to ship production systems without complete specifications

Preferred:

• Experience with device abstraction standards and interoperability frameworks
• Background in lab automation, scientific instrumentation, or life sciences
• Open source maintainership with external contributor management
• Additional languages: C, C++,.NET, or Rust for vendor driver integration
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or edge deployment scenarios
• German language skills for vendor communication

This role may not be suitable if:

• Your Python experience is primarily web APIs and databases without hardware debugging
• You prefer extensive upfront architecture design over iterative delivery
• You enjoy integration work but not the follow-up generalization and documentation effort
• You want to focus solely on library development without customer delivery deadlines
