(Senior) Product Engineer (Backend)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking a backend-focused Product Engineer to join their team in Germany. Our client builds products that directly improve how frontline employees work, and this role offers deep ownership of backend systems while staying connected to the broader product vision.

You'll work within cross-functional product squads alongside product managers, designers, and engineers across multiple disciplines. This position emphasizes end-to-end ownership—from understanding user needs through shipping and measuring impact. The team encourages using modern AI coding tools to expand your capabilities across the technology stack.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain reliable, scalable backend services and product features using Kotlin or Java with modern web frameworks
• Own features from initial user problem discovery through development, rollout, and impact evaluation
• Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate user needs into high-quality shipped experiences
• Contribute beyond backend when needed, including web, mobile, infrastructure, and other parts of the product stack
• Leverage AI coding assistants to navigate unfamiliar codebases, accelerate development, and prototype solutions outside your primary specialization
• Explore user problems through prototypes, instrumentation, experimentation, and collaboration with customer-facing teams
• Help evolve engineering practices toward more product-minded ownership and AI-enabled development
• Contribute to reliable deployment and infrastructure practices with technologies like Kubernetes, Helm, and messaging systems

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Professional experience in backend software engineering with strong foundation in Kotlin or Java
• Experience with frameworks such as Micronaut or Spring
• Background developing SaaS products, ideally within Agile and cross-functional environments
• Backend specialization combined with willingness to contribute to frontend, mobile, or infrastructure when required
• Familiarity with AI-powered coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) or strong willingness to adopt them
• Product mindset focused on understanding user problems and delivering measurable outcomes
• Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders across product, design, and engineering
• Strong curiosity, adaptability, and engineering judgment

Nice to have:

• Experience working with designers, mockups, or prototypes
• Background with instrumentation, experimentation, A/B testing, Grafana, or Mixpanel
• Knowledge of Kubernetes and Helm
• Experience with PostgreSQL and messaging systems such as RabbitMQ or Apache Kafka
