Senior Mesh Network and MAC Engineer (All Genders)

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential defence technology client based in Berlin. They are building autonomous platforms designed to operate in contested environments, with a focus on precision engineering and real-world deployment. We are seeking a Senior Mesh Network and MAC Engineer to architect communication protocols that enable dynamic, directional networking across mobile platforms.

This is a unique opportunity to work on tactical-grade systems where your networking protocols will run on physical hardware in demanding operational scenarios.

Responsibilities

• Architect and implement MAC protocols and routing algorithms specifically designed for directional multi-node systems, solving neighbour discovery challenges under highly focused, narrow beams
• Build dynamic TDMA schedules and beam coordination mechanisms integrated with physical layer (PHY) and antenna steering systems, ensuring routing decisions reflect real-time RF characteristics
• Deliver resilient multi-hop relay capabilities sustaining high-bandwidth video and control links between mobile platforms over tactical distances, routing seamlessly to ground control stations under dynamic conditions
• Build and maintain multi-node Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testbeds with automated logging pipelines to quantitatively evaluate network join times and topology reform behaviours
• Bridge theoretical signal processing with real-world hardware execution, taking direct ownership of key software and firmware modules

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Proven track record of designing and shipping mesh networking protocols in commercial or defence products—simulation-only experience does not qualify
• Deep, practical expertise with the Linux networking stack at kernel and packet levels, with strong live-debugging skills on embedded systems
• Strong understanding of wireless propagation and physical layer realities
• Hands-on experience designing medium-access control schemes or TDMA schedulers
• Radio-literate with experience designing a medium-access scheme or TDMA schedule

Preferred experience:

• Active contributions to open-source routing protocols (batman-adv, olsrd, Babel)
• Professional background at tactical mesh vendors (such as Silvus, Persistent Systems, TrellisWare, Saab, or Bittium)
• Experience with mmWave backhaul systems or technologies where directional beamforming is the default mode of operation
