About This Opportunity

We are representing a growing, family-owned technology organization in the Freiburg area that develops hardware and software solutions for industrial machine vision and automation. Their systems are deployed in over 15,000 machines worldwide.

Our client is seeking a Linux System Administrator to join their intentionally small IT team. This position offers exceptional creative freedom—rather than rigid corporate structures, you'll have direct access to leadership and the ability to actively shape technical decisions. The technology stack is firmly rooted in Linux and Open Source, and upcoming projects include migrating applications to Open Source alternatives, expanding cybersecurity and resilience capabilities, and continuously developing an internal Linux-based AI server.

This is a hybrid position based in Freiburg with flexible working arrangements, typically one day per week remote (with potential for additional remote work by agreement). The role requires strong German language skills (C1 minimum) and fluent English.

Responsibilities

• Manage and optimize the Linux system landscape along with associated network and IT infrastructure
• Drive continuous development of systems and lead migrations from proprietary software to suitable Open Source alternatives
• Work with virtualization and containerization technologies including Proxmox, Docker, and vSphere
• Automate processes using tools such as Python and Ansible
• Advance security and resilience initiatives, addressing technical requirements around NIS 2, GDPR, CRA, and TISAX
• Maintain and expand the company's Linux-based AI server infrastructure to support secure internal use of artificial intelligence
• Provide second and third-level technical support for predominantly technical users
• Collaborate directly with leadership to determine the strategic direction of IT infrastructure

What We're Looking For

• Completed vocational training as IT specialist, IT system administrator, computer science degree, or comparable qualification
• Minimum 2 years professional experience with clear focus on Linux administration following completion of training or studies
• Very strong Linux expertise—you already work routinely with Linux and don't need to learn the operating system from scratch
• Solid understanding of network technology, network protocols, and IT infrastructure
• Experience with virtualization or container technologies such as Proxmox, Docker, or vSphere
• Knowledge of automation using Python, Ansible, or comparable technologies
• Enthusiasm for Open Source and interest in building an IT landscape on open and secure solutions long-term
• Fluent German (C1 minimum) and English language skills
• Independent, pragmatic working style with desire to actively shape technical decisions and experiment with new solutions as a team
• Knowledge of Nextcloud, Open Xchange, Nginx, pfSense, OpenVPN, Git, or Ceph, as well as IT security experience, are advantageous
